Topher opens his mouth to say something about the fact that he's not always so nice, but that's a mistake numerous people have made around here and it's not that he doesn't want to be nice or doesn't try. He's just an egomaniac with some mild sociopathic tendencies and the average Joe doesn't get the opportunity to see those sides of him.

But rather than correcting her and crushing her hopes and dreams, he shrugs again. "I get that a lot, but it's a rough transition. You need to be led into it gently.
