twenty second jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: Something's different. Characters will wake with the vague feeling that they're being watched, but they will have no memories of anything strange occurring. The sensation will most likely fade throughout the day. It's nothing to worry about; just another side effect of the post-jump disorientation, right?

You feel like you're being watched.

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

For weeks she had drifted through the ship. She lost track of how long she had been out there in the halls, waiting in order to find something -- or for something to eventually find her.

That was before the jump. But she's here now, in a way that almost feels like a sleepy dream. Strange, she doesn't even remember when she got back to get into a gravity couch. She just knows that she is awake, blinking, and alive to carry on like nothing life-threatening had ever happened... simply because it's all that matters.

Rey is now dressed and cleaned and standing in front of the hallway leading out of the medbay. Perhaps she is blocking someone's way, but that courtesy doesn't register on her concerns. Instead, she is far more intent on the remains in front of her.

It's blood; if it's one thing Rey can never mistake anything for, it's that. And there's enough for this to belong to a whole person here.

"Who are you?" Rey wonders idly to herself. The question, although rhetorical, is enough for her to be heard.

There are several things that Rose finds odd about the scene in front of her, the first of which is, of course, the human remains. She knows what happens to someone who doesn't make it back to the gravity couches in time for the jump, but she's never seen it in action, which makes the splatter of gore across the hallway interesting in of itself.

What really takes the cake, however, is the woman standing there, watching it as if she expects it to do something. Rose is just within earshot when Rey voices her question.

"Unfortunate," she says, all at once an answer and a commentary on the situation in general. "Should have been more punctual."

Rey does not jump at the sound of another's voice breaking the silence around her. She does not move, and instead stands rigid in the middle of the hall. Her head cocks.

"Perhaps he was." She remembers it happening before -- someone who didn't miss a jump because someone/something had prevented him from making it there in time. It may be worth checking the network as soon as she is by her lonesome to make sure that it had not become a repeat incident.

Even if there isn't, there is always suspicion of foul play. This happened too close to where they all slept that it feels like a cruel taunt to one in their last moments alive.

The scene of what is clearly a deceased person, accompanied by the crawling itch of paranoia sets her on edge ever-so-slightly. She regards the bloody splat in front of them with a mixture of disgust and fascination.

"I knew what happened, if you didn't make it back in time, but I hadn't seen it yet."

She tears her gaze away from what's left of the body and moves it to the woman beside her.

"We should call medical, I think. An accident, or something else?"

"Not much left to see afterwards." Her eyes are still fixed on the blood and meat even as the girl shifts to her peripheral vision. Rey has seen this before. Not just here, but several times. She had no room left for surprise, only a jaded lingering.

The medbay is nearby, so medical should be as well. Though Rey doesn't see what more could be done for this corpse here. Autopsy? There's not much left to cut open. Though it would be best that someone clean this up before people start walking in. This is the last thing they need, don't they? She knows this, and yet Rey can't seem to bring herself to move.

"Something else." This doesn't feel like an accident. With the particular feeling that someone is following them in the walls, in the light fixtures, under their feet -- this feels like anything but an accident.

But perhaps that is neurosis getting the best of her.

"Foul play," she says quietly, bringing a hand to her chin in thought.

It is, of course, something Rose considered, mostly because this is the S.S. Murdership, after all. More mysteries to solve--that's all the ship can provide, it seems.

"Has something like this happened before? I can only assume so, as we're always warned to be in the couches before the jump, but..."

Rose trails off, at that, a bit unsure of what else could be said.

She hesitates, then nods. Rey has a traveler on this ship for a long time now, and knows better than to chalk things up like this to accident.

Then she remembers the corpses in the long and winding hallways, back when she got stuck in them. She remembers the screams of the man on the network, and up until recently his voice had returned -- but his living body (if it exists) is nowhere to be found.

"Yes." Her answer is so short and curt that she is reluctant to continue. "It was 'some kind of lock failure,' he said. Then he died. Funny how those seem to happen just before a jump."

It's funny, but she isn't laughing.

"Hotspur," Rose says his name quietly. She hadn't been here for that, but she'd heard his voice, screaming his warning long after he'd died.

It's unsettling to think about, and she isn't one who is easily unsettled.

"Perhaps the same thing happened this time. It seems odd that he'd be so close and not be able to make it into the stasis tanks."

"Some kind of lock failure." Rey echoes, only this time not repeating Hotspur's words exactly.

Because really, it strikes her kind of odd. This whole setup is odd. How long would it be before this happens again? Who will it be then?

She thinks about it. "Whoever it is must've got on someone's bad side."

"So I suppose," she says carefully. "The question is whose bad side."

Rose can make a few educated guesses. Though it's certainly not out of the question that one of the passengers has borne a grudge, she likes a good conspiracy theory.

"Ward's, or that red emoticon that everyone likes to talk about?"

Good question.

"Would be easier if we can identify the body. May be possible to know who they were more liable to piss off."

Just one more thing to look into. As SEC, it seems like the thing to do. Rey's mind runs through a laundry list of tasks -- cordon off the scene, if they can even do that now.

"No one I know, I hope."

She's fairly sure it isn't--Rose makes a habit of being very nosy towards the people she's close to, after all.

She also makes a habit of not-so-subtly stalking her brothers, but that's neither here nor there, with the dead body on the floor.

"Seems like a job for Medical."

With Rey's luck, she's not in any position to say the same. So many people she knows have ways of coming and going, which is the way it's always been.

"For your sake, I'd hope so, too." People have different ways of dealing with losing someone they care about. Rey has learned to take it in stride. She's seen it happen too often anymore.

Better to keep a distance.

"Yes, it does. I'll notify them."

She wonders if it's even worth a burial when there's nothing really left to put in the ground.
