I think they probably don't like the idea because then that means someone might eat them, too. Makes people queasy. As if humans are really on top of the food chain -- I mean, just on Earth we've got predators that are way better at killing things naturally than we are with technology. And not just because they're bigger, either, though that sure as hell helps.

It could be. We don't know what Smiley is. We don't know much of anything, but seeing as the halls move and doors randomly lock and elevators go to the wrong destination and then won't let you back in? Totally could be. Not that I'm an expert on machines, animals are more my thing.
