[ kids shouldn't have to be a lot of things, but no one took that into account when they built the maze. when thomas built the maze, something he never forgets, can't shake the guilt over it. no one thought about what kids should or shouldn't have to be, just that they had to do it. just like right now they have to run, feet pounding on the dirt-smeared ground, chests heaving, gasping for breath as they try to evade whatever's coming.
