Spaceman [Open]

CHARACTERS: John Blake ([personal profile] oversight) +  Open
LOCATION: Medbay + Various
WARNINGS: N/A at this time - will update as needed
SUMMARY: After more than a week, John comes out of a comatose state to a slow recovery and much confusion.
NOTES: Takes place June 12th (and beyond).

At first the light filtering through his eyelashes is so strong and unfamiliar, so unexpected, he's involuntarily taken from the present and placed somewhere (somewhen) else entirely.
Age twelve, halfway through his internment as a ward of the state, Blake — Johnny back then — had developed a persistent cough near the beginning of the school year that didn't budge from his chest for a month. Occasionally his temperature would spike, but being carefully monitored at the boys' home, he'd mostly managed to avoid the unnecessary probing that came with lasting illnesses.

On a warm evening, as he'd been known to do many times before, Johnny opted for a perch on the fire escape outside the window of the stuffy main dormitory. A breeze blowing between the buildings offered some respite, but brought with it an unnatural chill. Instead of heading back inside, Blake had remained to watch the eerie blue lights drifting freely in front of his eyes as they danced in the dusky l. He'd seen fireflies before, in some of Gotham's larger parks, but these were different, he thought, like blue pulses of electricity flitting around the sky.

And then he'd woken up, apparently several hours later, to the stark and harsh brilliance of fluorescent lights overhead. Very thoroughly transported, both physically and mentally, Johnny had no time to think of answers outside the juvenile realm before deciding very furtively that he'd been abducted.

Aliens, spaceships, kidnapping: sci-fi mumbo-jumbo coaxed to life by an active imagination and fueled by a modern hospital room and a temperature of 103°.
Back in the medbay, a much older (but possibly no wiser) Blake might very nearly drown in the irony as his memories — much more current memories — begin flooding back to him.

He opens his eyes again and it's slightly more bearable, a bit more familiar, but the medbay's certainly not the last place he remembers. It had been hallways, dead ends, the familiar glow of of his phone's screen and every type of unbearable sensation imaginable. Not this. Nothing like this.

Swinging his legs over the side of the bed, John rubs his eyes and then his face and he's not pleased to find a substantial amount of stubble or a particularly telling weakness that goes bone-deep. Just how long has it been?

Wearily and warily, he finds his footing (miraculous in of itself) and finds his things (maybe almost as miraculous), but getting out of the medbay and back to his room is already feeling like a monumental task.
