Edgeworth! [Kaylee has a big grin on her face - but probably even more noticeable than that is the outrageous dress she's wearing. Have fun with that!]

You should always smile at parties, you know. You had anything to drink? That'll help you relax! [Fortunately, she just got something from the bar, so she helpfully offers it to Edgeworth.]

[Perhaps fortunately for Kaylee, she has walked up to perhaps the only person in the world who would take a look at that dress and not fall into either the camp of she looks ridiculous or she looks rather cute. No: she has approached Miles Edgeworth, who takes a look at that pink and those frills and nods approvingly.]

Kaylee. You look quite distinguished.

[He looks down at her hand, however, and...Well, it would be far too awkward to refuse a lady. He hadn't intended to drink this evening, but...He accepts it from her hand.]

And you have my thanks.

[Coming from Edgeworth, that is clearly a very high compliment! So Kaylee is going to take it as such, with a great big grin.]

Thanks! I just love this dress. Perfect for a party. So are you a friend of Jenna's?

[Edgeworth hesitates before responding - though, for once, it's not because of his reluctance to name someone a friend. No: rather, it's because he's simply not certain how to define Jenna. What he has with her...It's not like what he has with, say, Sirius Black. It feels like something different - maybe something more.

But - good God, what if he were to say all that aloud? Best case, Kaylee would assume that there was something romantic going on, which wasn't true at all; worst case, she'd understand the curious depth of his feeling and then word would get back to Jenna and then Jenna is her nice, warm, kind way would tell him, Sorry, kiddo, but no.

Well. No matter. The simpler response:]

I...am. Yes. May I assume you are as well?

Don't know her much, but she seems real nice! I love makin' new friends, hearing their stories, learning about people and where they come from. [She bounces a little on her heels, making the dress fwump a little around her. She loves being in this dress, almost as much as she loves talking to people.]

You're a real good friend for coming to this, you don't do this much do ya?

Nothing of the sort.

[He shakes his head emphatically at that.]

Simply being present is hardly anything of great value.

[And then he realizes...maybe that was rude.]

[Kaylee tilts her head at Edgeworth, almost frowning a little. Does he not understand friendship?]

Bein' there is half of it, at least! You gotta be there before anything else happens, after all. You gotta be there to listen, to offer support, to get wild and have fun. You always gotta be there.

And I'm sure Jenna's really glad that you're here, now. That's got a lotta value.

[But his response is just to shift uncomfortably, shake his head, and try to change the subject:]

How did you meet Ms. Sommers?

On the network, when she invited everyone. I've been wanting to wear my dress since I got it, so I asked her if I could wear it to this. She seems real nice.

Yes, she is. Unflaggingly so.

[He's a little embarrassed by the fervor in his voice, so he hides a bit behind his drink.]

[Kaylee doesn't miss it, though, and she grins a little.]

I see. Well, I hope you got her a drink or somethin'.

[He stiffens slightly, suddenly somewhat alarmed.]

Is that the etiquette?

[Because if so, he's heard nothing of it - ]

I dunno, just seems like it'd be a nice thing to do for her, since you like her so much. [Gosh, Edgeworth, just let her set you up, okay?]

Oh. Then this is something that, er - friends do for one another.

[talkstoengines]

That's right! Friends, yep. [Hey, whatever works.] You do nice things for 'em. Get 'em drinks.

Maybe even take 'em to the holodeck sometimes! The real special ones, anyway.

Uh-huh. [She's not quite sure what syntax means, but that's okay. She takes his arm gently, trying not to let her skirt get too much in the way.] You remind me a lot of Simon, have you met him? He's around here somewhere.

[He clears his throat - and then realizes that the gallant thing to do isn't to let her take his arm, but rather to pull back so that he can offer it to her properly, with a small bow.]

Miss.

[And then he answers her question.]

And yes, I know him. He's a very sensible fellow. Good to have on the medical team.

[That little gesture makes her face light up - hey, it's not very often she makes friends with a real life gentleman.]

You and him are about as awkward as it gets. It's cute.

[He looks over at her, very faintly affronted.]

[Kaylee just grins.] 'Course you're not. Once you have a few drinks, at least.
