Police and Thieves
CHARACTERS: selina kyle and john blake
LOCATION: shuttle bay
WARNINGS: umm, Idk… spoilers for tdkr and maybe some general teasing towards the detective?
SUMMARY: John lost his wallet (aka: Brendan "creeper boy" Frye stole something from someone else) and John thinks Selina can help him.
NOTES: following this little text exchange
[ Sure, Selina knows she could have very well just ignored his text, and went on acting as if she didn't know John Blake was even aboard the ship with her. But the man did say he would owe her if she helped him, and she knows she honestly can’t pass up an opportunity like that (you'd be silly if you did).
Because like it or not, she was out of her element in space, and clearly was still lacking on the proper tools needed to fully understand it all (a girl can only stalk the network for so long before she realizes people aren't that much help). And sadly from the looks of it, the detective was making friends fast, which could only help her in the long run if she played her cards right. So in all honesty, it only made sense to her that she attempted to see just what the detective could offer her in the way of understanding. And if that meant perhaps offering her assistance in some form, well, she was going to do just that. (Just how much she was willing to offer though was still up for debate.)
So there she was, just before the scheduled time, sitting on a stray tool box in the shuttle bay, simply pretending to mind her own business as she waited for the detective to arrive. ]

He can't take it to Gordon - Gordon doesn't know any more than he does. They have access to the same resources, the same people.
But Selina - she's in an entirely different position. Blake saw her record. She has a skill set that might be helpful to him in this. There might be people who will talk to her who wouldn't talk to someone like him. Places she could go - or break into.
Still, he doesn't plan to trust her any farther than he can throw her, but she's his best shot for possibly finding out who might want to take his wallet, and why. Because it's not really about the wallet - it's pretty worthless here, except as a possible source of information on him. And Blake would definitely like to know who wants to have that information.
After his patrol shift, he hurries right down to the shuttle bay, used at least to clandestine meetings, even if he doesn't particularly like them. Spotting Selina, he gives her a nod, hands shoved in his pockets.]
Miss Kyle.

Detective. [ she calmly states, looking up at the man with a look one could almost consider; unimpressed. She knows (or clearly assumes) it mustn't be easy for Blake to come here looking to her for help like he was - if she was in his position, she clearly wouldn't be all too thrilled about it. But she can only assume; Blake honestly might be low on leads, and clearly was in some need of understanding.
She sighs, crossing her legs at her knees, as a faint smirk settles at the corner of her lips. ]
Did you miss me?
[ She knows he didn't - why would he - but the need to subtly get under his skin right then, seemed like a fun idea. ]

So she's just playing games with him. More games. Blake hates them, and wishes he didn't have to deal with her at all. They both know he'd rather just pretend she wasn't here.
But since he can't do that, he might as well attempt to make use of her.]
You know the answer to that.
[He's not beating around the bush - not today, not ever. He's just not that kind of person. He might wear a facade, but it's a straightforward one.]
Look, I'm not here to try and inconvenience you, or anything. I just figured you might be able to help me learn who would want my wallet, and why. [He pauses a beat.] Unless you took it, but that seems kind of... beneath you.

A faint smirk appeared at the corner of her mouth then, taking a long breath as she did, as she casually remarked: ]
It's nice to see you too, Detective.
[ His statement about his wallet does seem to get her full attention (for the most part) as she lets her head rests slightly to the side, quietly considering why someone would even bother taking the man's wallet in the first place. As he honestly didn't appear to be anyone of great value on the outside (who knows what he is like on the inside though), so pocketing his wallet seemed like a waste of effort - unless, they were looking for information that was.
And in that case, Selina could only curiously ask: ] Do wallets mysteriously go mission around here often, or are you just the lucky first?
[ assuming he might have heard if something like this had happened to others that is. ]
no subject
But she does bring up a good point - is there someone just lifting wallets all over the ship? He hasn't heard anything about it.]
There hasn't been a rash of complaints about stolen items to the security team lately, but we both know that could mean little or less in a place like this. [How many people here would even trust the security team to look into something like that? He wonders. Maybe not many. After all, he himself hasn't exactly told anyone else about this. Maybe most people aren't as paranoid as him, but still.]
I can't say anything about unreported thefts, though.
[Which, he hopes, is where Selina might come in.]
no subject
Anyone catching your eye? [ as she still didn't know if she would help him or not, but at least she could get an idea of who might be interested in him, it would be something. ]
no subject
I've met and talked to a lot of people since I got here. Some only once, some a few times. None that raised any major red flags, though there are clearly some suspicious types on the network. One or two people speaking to me anonymously, but I don't have any way to track their identities.

before she is pointing out: ] You realize Crane was here, correct? [ stressing the was, as he clearly wasn't here anymore and the lack of understanding as to why with that was obviously interesting to her. ]
no subject
[Of course, everybody knew what he'd done all those years ago, it's just weird to think about him being here, of all people.] He was here, but he's not anymore?
no subject
Not the same one that held court recently - but yes, he was here. [ and she left it at that, knowing if blake wanted to understand it further he would have to ask for clarification from her. ]
no subject
So you spoke to him? And he's not here anymore? [Blake's wallet is small beans, he needs to know what Crane was up to while he was here.]
no subject
It appears he was here for some time as well. [ not that she fully understood how that was possible, but from what she was slowly gathering over the network, it seemed to be the case. ] And had made a few friends along the way.

Happy to help, Detective. [ granted, she hadn't learned exactly who his friends were (and she more than likely wasn't going to share) but she could tell, he had seemed to blend in rather well here - for the most part. ]
You could perhaps check the brig as well [ a beat, her weight shifting from one side to the other ] I hear he was locked up for a spell.

[ she paused, glancing around them yet again, before slowly settling back onto blake. ] I suppose someone will have some type of details on things though.
Though, I do wonder what version of Crane they will come up with. [ as clearly the crane here, wasn't the same crane from back home as of late. ]
no subject
You mean, he was from our past. [It's not really phrased as a question. He's seen Bruce, he knows about all of that. It's... frustrating, a little, but there's nothing they can do about it.]
Look, I need to know as much as you can tell me. I don't suppose your source for all of this information would be willing to talk to me, would they?
no subject
It appears that way. [ she calmly stated, as her attention focused on one of the shuttles for a moment, silent finding the absurdity of it all again (they were on a spaceship - it was odd – can you blame her?) ] You know as much as I do, Detective. [ she calmly pointed out, finally settling her attention back on him with an almost stoic expression. ]
He did not seem to recall much of anything. And he clearly looked somewhat younger then what I last saw of him. [ and perhaps more sane ]
And as far as my sources go. [ she sighed almost dramatically, her eyes rolling in mock amusement ] I highly doubt anyone that was supposed friends with him, would actually be willing to talk to a detective - so no - don't bet on it.
no subject
So, anything you can give us, would be helpful. [His hands are tied. Maybe, back in Gotham, before Bane, a situation like this, he'd have the upper hand. Be able to offer her something of value in exchange for the information. But here and now, he's basically got nothing, and they both know it.
Nothing except who he is, and his position on the security team, anyway.]
no subject
Well, I'm sure you and the Commissioner have a lot to talk about. [ she said with a small sigh, slipping off the bench as she did. ] Perhaps we will have to stay in contact though.
[ it wasn't much of a statement, she knew that. but it was enough for her to assume, he would see: she was willing to work with him in some small way. ]
But until then, I will gladly see what I can find about a missing wallet, Detective. [ her tone teasing and light as she again approached him with a sly smile on her face. ]
no subject
I appreciate it, Ms. Kyle. Just - let me know if you find anything, about the wallet or about Crane. Or anything else of interest. I'll try to return the favor. [And he really means that - she's doing him a huge favor and he knows it. He won't forget.]
