in which harry potter gets a surprise drop-in visit from his mum ( closed )

CHARACTERS: Harry Potter & Lily Evans
LOCATION: Kitchen on the 16th passenger floor.
WARNINGS: awkward family bonding!!
SUMMARY: Lily wants to spend some koala-t time with her future son, so obviously making him bake cookies with her is the best way to do it

[ despite the fact that Lily's fairly sure this might be awkward of her to even try and orchestrate, she's decided that it's time for her and Harry to spend some time together, yes, absolutely the right time for it. and it has nothing to do with the fact that James has been maybe possibly missing for a certain amount of days now, and there isn't anything she can do to fix it. it has nothing to do with wanting to check in with the small group of people who matter to her here. none.

and it's pretty optimistic of Lily to assume that Harry will be just sitting in his room with no future plans for the day, but she heads up to his floor without text messaging him first, just heads right on up and checks her communicator twice to make sure she has his passenger number right before knocking lightly on his door.
]

Harry? [ because she does't want him to think someone random is stopping by for a visit, it's just her, nothing to worry about. oh, but Godric, she's nervous now. is she 'someone random'? she could be. she doesn't think of herself that way but really, to Harry, she might be still, which is a little daunting. what is she doing here? ] --No rush or anything, just wanted to let you know that it's only me. [ ... ] Lily. [ ... ] I was hoping I could steal you for an hour or so, if you're not busy. [ ... ] I really do hope you're in, because otherwise I've been standing out here talking to noone-

He is, in fact, in there and quickly answers the door looking a little damp around the edges. He'd been out for a run through the gardens and hit the showers before heading back to his room to try and read a few more pages of that thrice-Merlin damned book that Arthur had loaned him.

"Lily! Of course, I'm entirely stealable. In need of being stolen, in fact."

"I can always eat." He's eighteen, whippet-thin, and a bottomless pit of a man. Given the chance, Harry would be content with a second lunch. (And sometimes a spare snack before supper.) "I'm not great in the kitchen, but I can manage. What did you want to make?"

Harry gives his hair one last towelling, attempts to put some sort of order to it, and grabs his wand and glasses before they leave his room. Lily is welcome to notice that he keeps it relatively neat and that his few possessions - a diary, a book, and some basic stationary supplies - are displayed with care.

"I can do that. I used to cook more, but I sort of tapered off after a while." After he went to Hogwarts and the Dursleys stopped trusting him in the kitchen, Harry hadn't much time or space to bother with it. He'll cook to feed himself, but doesn't have any real passion or interest in it as a hobby.

"How've you been? After the pirates, I mean."

"Once I went to Hogwarts, I didn't need to. The elves took care of it and...oh, do you think they'll have anything like pumpkin juice here? I've been looking for it and can't find anything that's quite the same." Perhaps he'll convince someone to grow pumpkins in the oxygen gardens and have to learn to make his own? Harry's pretty sure that it's not an unreasonable request. Surely, if they don't have earth-pumpkins, maybe they've some other form of space-gourd.

"And, well, other than the lack of pumpkins, I'm well enough." While he desperately misses flying, he doesn't mind the lack of windows. "I've applied to work with the flight crew and trying to catch up on all the technology is keeping me more than busy."

"The shuttles and it's about as safe as anything else. I'd thought about security, but that's what's waiting for me when I go back." He pauses, looking away from Lily for a moment while he decides whether or not to continue. "I'm an Auror back home. A bit young for it, never really finished school, but there you go."

"I miss my broom and I thought that the shuttles are as close as I'm likely to get."

"I don't actually know all that much. I, ah, didn't really get the formal training." Harry covers his wince, but this is why he didn't mention it earlier. He was worried that people will think he's some sort of magical prodigy when he's really, truly not. "I'd been doing a bit of fieldwork mixed with practice, but with the state of things, there really hadn't been any time or anyone to teach."

He's all very matter of fact about it, because as far as he knows, that's just the way it is, but it's not normal. It's certainly ill-advised to fling teenagers out into the field without support.
