The corridor you're walking down seems to stretch on forever, but maybe that's just the gloom ever-present in the belly of the ship, only cut through by the skittering beams of the flashlights you're carrying and the dim signal on the map. The map led you here, and the map seemed to indicate there was something at the end of this journey; a new area, perhaps, more answers. Something worth the risk of stepping into the darkness. Best stay alert, strain your senses — though there will be little advantage found in the warning of claws clicking against metal in the distance, a flash of red on the wall to your right... |

[ it's not the snappiest comeback, true, but jenna's more focused on trying to fit together the strange, contradictory things her senses keep insisting are all existing together. ]
Does that mean you don't want to know what's freaking me out?
no subject
true doctors can come up with better things than that even while distracted. ( that's a lie, they totally can't. ) ]
Something tells me even if I say know you're gonna take it upon yourself to enlighten me.
no subject
[ it's an attempt at her usual teasing, but it falls flat and jenna sighs, rubbing a hand over her face. ]
I told you the smelling blood thing is part of the vampire package, right?
[ a beat, and with a little more equilibrium gained back ] Call me a bloodhound and I'll smack you.
know =/= no i am so ashamed rn
[ mccoy's jaw sort of tenses up at the potential implications of what she's saying before he ends up saying the first thing to try and— pretend he's not actually going to hear exactly what he doesn't want to. ]
If the shoe fits, Sommers, can't help it. [ a beat. ] Pegged you more as a German Shepard though.
yeah EW ALLY TYPOS i never make those
You ass.
[ but at least she's gentle with the promised smacking. ]
I can't believe you said that to me. I am never letting you live it down, calling a lady a dog. What would your mother say about that? [ her tone is grateful, though, bones you're a lifesaver. ] Here's the good news-- this room smells like old blood.
that wasn't even a typo. it was A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORD.
[ no really though, he has. ]
She'd ask me what type of woman you were. She did call my ex-wife a bitch. [ technically in the job description, it ain't no thing jenna. ]
You call that a good thing? [ no really. ]
IT WAS A HOMOPHONE IT COUNTS
[ just rolling her eyes mightily at you bones
M I G H T I L Y ]
The bad news is it's... covered in it. Which means it should be fresh. [ she shrugs, gnawing on her lower lip for a moment. ] But it's old. Really old.
A HOMOPHONE THAT EVEN HAS THE WORD I MEANT IN IT.
[ southern sass activate! because fuck that eyeroll. ]
Having a room covered in— if blood sprays it could mean that the entire room is covered, supposedly stays in enough so you can smell it. [ never under estimate a blood splatter, jenna. ] Old enough that it couldn't have happened when we were here?
no subject
[ bones she loves you so much she can't even forreal. ]
No, no, it's-- think of it like this, and no more dog comparisons this time. [ js. ] I don't know how old it is, other than 'about as old as the rest'. But it's not faded. Scents fade with time. This smells old and like it happened yesterday concentration-wise at the same time. [ which should be impossible. ]
no subject
[ no really, he just calls it like it is, don't judge him for that. ]
I'll bite my tongue like my mama would like me to. [ fine fine. ] That shouldn't— it looks as old as the rest, should be as old as the rest, but smells like it definitely isn't that old. You realize that sounds impossible, right?
no subject
[ she sighs helplessly, rubbing a hand over her face. ]
Sometimes I really hate this stupid ship.
no subject
[ that's not nearly as malicious as it could be and he sort of hops right over it with a snort. ]
When you start liking this ship, that's when we've got a problem. Consider it a sign you've still got your mind.
no subject
[ but she's more amused than scolding-- it works, lbr here bones. ]
--you're a master of the art of underwhelming reassurance, has anyone ever told you that?
no subject
[ which is to say man don't ask me. ]
Multiple occasions. Was also told I have the worst bedside manner most people have ever seen, that sort of thing. It's almost a point of pride at this point. Did you really want me to say what everyone else would?
no subject
[ what you expected her not to take that literally
bones. ]
Honestly? [ she shrugs, smile wry. ] I like your honesty. I'll give you hell about it for the rest of time, but I like it.
no subject
[ why jenna why. ]
You like it so much that you've gotta give me hell about it. Because that makes perfect sense even by Southern logic standards.
no subject
[ B E C A U S E ]
You'd get a swelled head if I didn't. It's a cautionary measure. [ she loevs you bones. ]
no subject
[ THAT'S NOT A GOOD REASON. ]
Ms. Sommers, the only way I'm getting a swelled head is if I switch brains with an idiotic captain friend of mine. And since I haven't yet, trust me, it's the last thing you need to worry about.
no subject
[ YES IT IS GOD ]
Oh my god, don't make me do the 'it's Jenna' speech again. [ she pauses, sighs. ] It's not the same, but I miss him too. We knew each other for a while... just, you know. If you ever want to talk about him.
[ another pause. ]
Or we can never bring it up again, depending on how much you're ready to tell me to butt out right now.
no subject
[ IS NOT. ]
I'll call you whatever I want to call you. [ there's a jaw tightening that he knows she can probably see before he lets out a very harsh huff through his nose. ]
Don't. [ that means don't talk about him at all to me. ] Unless you're looking to have me break every nice gentleman rule on the books as far as hitting someone goes, just leave it be, Sommers.
[ how you know bones is real mad at you, there's no miss and there's no first name. just last name. ]
Probably better off not here anyway. Get himself into too much trouble that I'd have to patch up.
no subject
[ a little pointed on the name, but her tone is sympathetic. she can't say the idea of talking about mason thrilled her after she lost him— it doesn't thrill her now. ]
I got the trouble vibe pretty fast— he hit on me when we first met. I mentioned the boyfriend with a gun collection, but it didn't do much to deter him.
[ and bless him for it says her tone. ]
no subject
[ because okay maybe she could, but he likes to think he can put up a fair fight. his lips quirk up just slightly at the tone. bless his heart. ]
Should have seen the one with the phaser collection. And there the few others that made phaser man look a bit tame.
[ a beat. ] He likes what he likes. Does what he— wants.
no subject
[ which is to so: we're okay, this doesn't have to be feelings hour. ]
He's a good man, if maybe not one over-burdened with impulse control.
no subject
[ that sounds like a really childish, 'i'm going to get back at you' comment that usually ends in pranks but it's not that bad. really. ]
You learn to deal with it as time goes by if he attaches himself to you.
no subject
[ at least they can get around confrontations via childish poking, right? ]
He's a good man. [ she just quietly repeats herself there, offering bones a sympathetic shrug. ] Despite his best efforts.
