SUMMARY: Thor is exploring the ship and found his way to the gardens.

level one

[The cold, mechanical atmosphere of the ship has become somewhat oppressive. Thor is not used to living in such sterile surroundings.

He had heard that there were gardens on board, and decided to see for himself. However, when he finally locates and enters the gardens, the vast room he finds is not at all what he expected. There is plant life, but there is also the ever-present technology, keeping it all running.

He wanders down various pathways, gazing at the various plants and their attendant machines with obvious confusion, but also great interest.]

level three

[The overgrown wilderness of the upper levels is more what Thor was hoping to find. The hum of the ship is still there, but it's muffled by the greenery and plant life. He finds a small clearing and sits, leaning against a tree with his eyes closed.

Of course he never could remain still for long. Eventually he sits up straighter, taking Mjolnir into his hands. There has been a strangeness to the hammer ever since he arrived on board, and he wants to try calling its power, in a small, very controlled way.

After a few long moments of concentration, he succeeds in calling sparks to the hammer's head. He only holds them there for a moment before letting the gathered energy dissipate harmlessly. The frown on his face seems to indicate that the attempt was not as successful as he would have liked.]

[She can't help but feel proud about that. Jake had taught her how to brush Horse's coat and care for his hooves and all the important things one has to do to care for a horse. She pauses just in front of Thor and reaches up to pat Horse's face before making a gesture for him to join her. He's a good animal, he won't bite or anything.]

[Thor accepts her invitation. He gives the horse a friendly pat.]

I apologize, I have no apples or carrots for you.

[The girl seems rather quiet. He doesn't have a lot of experience with children, but he remembers that Volstagg's children were always noisy. He gives her another friendly smile.]

My name is Thor. What is your name?

[Apples are Horse's favorite, she thinks. Usually she has some on her, but she had been in a bit of a rush to get here today. Nill shifts when Thor looks at her, but doesn't move away. She lets go of the reigns and holds out her hands, gesturing with one of them to Thor's. The ground is too grassy for her to write it in the dirt, after all.]

[Her meaning is clear, although he's not sure what she has in mind.

He holds out his hands to her.]

[She sighs to herself, glad he's understood. The blonde flips his palm towards the sky, cradling it with one of her hands as she uses her other to slowly trace N-I-L-L.]

[When she finishes, he repeats it out loud.]

Nill. That is your name? It's a pleasure to meet you, Nill.

[Nill bobs her head, a shy smile crossing her lips. He's so tall, she has to tilt her head a bit to see him, and she thinks she's seen him on the ship before (so many jumps ago, she can hardly remember), but she never actually talked to him back then. He seems so nice. She wants to say that it's nice to meet him, but she hopes her smile relays that well enough.]

[Thor gives the horse one last pat, then drops down to one knee so she doesn't have to look up so far.]

And what are the names of your two companions?

[Coming down to her level makes everything so much easier. Heine still does it automatically, even though he'd made the comment that she's gotten taller since they'd been on the ship. It makes her feel good about herself. On his hand again, she traces "Horse" and "Dog." They were never really hers to name, and they came to her nameless.]

[He smiles as she spells them out.]

Those are very sensible names.

[That makes her laugh. In reality, her laugh is nothing more than slightly trembling shoulders and an open-mouthed smile. But she nods--yes, sensible is a good word for it. Most people think it's strange, but the animals seem to like them, so she's never seen anything wrong with it.]

Long ago, when I was a boy, I was given two mighty goats to pull my chariot. I named them Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder.
