The thought of using her hands like words had never really occurred to Nill. She would mime things occasionally, but that was always sightly different. Sign language meant that everything would be consistent, and understood by anyone who knew it. And if Heine or Bran or any of her friends come to some of these lessons, they'll at least be able to communicate more easily than ever before. Nill doesn't often feel as if she needs things, but this falls into that category.

When asked for a list, she immediately picks up a pen and pulls a piece of paper towards herself. The first phrase on the list is I cannot speak, and Do not panic, followed by I am Nill, as well as more common words and phrases: hello, goodbye, why?. She slides the list over to him, keeping the pen in hand in case she thinks of anything else.

It's a short list, and one he thinks will grow, but it's a fine start. He sets it aside for now, thinking idly in the back of his head about how to shape those phrases, and begins working with her on the alphabet and other basics. Severus moves briskly and isn't tender, but he's direct, clear, and giving her and this lesson his full attention. He will correct her when needed frankly, though it avoids being truly harsh; Severus has always been a strict teacher and it's the same one-on-one as it is in a classroom full of students.

"You should have something to practice from," he says after a while, and as he's finishing drawing references for the phrases she's written down. "Would you like to record a video of you doing the things we covered today? I can speak over it."

This method, notably, will allow her to show other people if she'd like to.
