"Do you have anything you'd like to ask me?" His voice edges on his forcibly patient teacher one-- yeah he can see you looking, dude, use your words. He's in a garden, plants are everywhere, is it that weird? Maybe if he was sitting here dissecting a living gnome or something, suspicious glares would be warranted.

Nod down to the rest of the botanical crew. He'd thought the question obvious, and the fact that he did carries through in his tone.
The fact that maybe he should explain why he should give enough shits to interrogate some grumpy looking Brit for hanging out with a collection of plants - whoosh.

There, that's simple enough. And true. --More or less true. Severus has begun to default to 'alchemist', finding muggles recognize it somewhat instead of having to explain potions. 'So it's chemistry?' makes him want to scream. He doesn't mind lecturing people on principle, but it's getting really old.
no subject
Not a judgmental "huh", even. Just "huh" - a noise that's supposed to give him time while he purses his lips and thinks it all over. The chain of thought is alchemist -> mediaeval -> not familiar with technology -> probably should be familiar with technology. And thus.
"There are labs. Or whatever."
(That's... supposed to be helpful. #youtried)

"Yes," Severus says, patience tinged wry, "I'm familiar enough with them to be splitting charge of the Xenobiology and Genetics wing of the science department. Alas, it is somewhat difficult to get gardening plots to cooperate on lab tables."
no subject
"Splitting charge," he repeats, but means it as an inquiry - and with that he also moves so that he's sitting down cross-legged, rather than looming a few meters above. Color him interested, in other words - even if his face doesn't say it.
"What do you need." Pause. "An' why."
Fuck if he knows what the science folks get up to.

"The other head is Charles Xavier, who is a geneticist. I am a sorcerer, I teach and head a house at an academy for witchcraft at home." So... there's that. Severus used to do the whole title for Hogwarts, but then Sirius started harping on 'omg somebody included you under the heading of witch ur a girl so insulting huhuhu'. Who cares.
"I'm just seeing what's here."
no subject
Now, he doesn't really give a shit about the sciences, but he does give a shit about the other departments, and what his own department is being used for.
He's also been here for so long that neither "sorcerer" nor "academy for witchcraft" get much more reaction than a nod. This guy had an attack tarp, he's heard of magical people here - at this point he'll just take it at face value. That doesn't really change his question though - he tries a different tack and holds out his left arm. The cut of the issued jumpsuit exposes crew nanites, and SCI » 002 » 026 stands out, inky black, against the pale inside of his forearm.
"I work here."
Which... is apparently all he thinks he needs to say on the matter.

A somewhat dramatic silence occurs.
Then, gravely: "Congratulations."
no subject
"I can help, Jesus. If it's not for anything fucked up, or whatever."
no subject
"Possibly you could begin by introducing yourself and telling me what it is you do here," he says tolerantly. "I'm used to most people who 'work' in any department here being hired on out of desperation." Which is not an insult and thus not said in a derogative way, but it's just that he's aware of the passenger situation in general. "I don't believe I've spoken with anyone from Agriculture before."
no subject
Goddamn he hates introductions. After rolling a shoulder he just nods, rattles it all off:
"Was The Netherlands, before I came here," which is accompanied by the flattest look don't even laugh, "personified, whatever. Doesn't matter here. Go by that, or - Ned, sometimes." Pause for breath. "Head of the department. Been head for - fifteen, twenty jumps."
It all starts blurring together, after a while.
no subject
"Netherlands," he repeats, as a greeting. "Professor Severus Snape. I've been here for three."
Which is really not a lot, so perhaps it's kind of weird that he's elbowed his way into not only leading a department but crowbarring magic into it, but he's a workaholic. A spiteful, know-it-all workaholic who is significantly less infuriating when he's busy, so it's all for the best, really.
no subject
So he leaves the introduction shit where it is and moves onto the more valuable topic of conversation, in his opinion. Points at the plants.
"We can grow whatever y'need, if we know what it is."

It's not that he thinks Severus is going to steal away seeds, or is particularly untrustworthy. (Not that he thinks Severus is to be trusted, either - so far his impression has been on the positive side of neutral.) It's that ned himself is particularly untrusting and has a few. Issues. When it comes to possessions and the Gardens, both. Oops.

Severus isn't bothered by the assertion. ... If that can be considered an assertion; if anything, he's surprised by how halting and sedate Netherlands seems about what he's saying.
la la la wraps up things etc
Severus. Does about the opposite of what he was expecting - not from Severus himself, just from any person who was possibly granted access to storage - he blinks and nods.
Jabs his thumb back and down toward storage and raises his brows.
(And then they did go forth and Catalogue the Seeds of
