thirty-ninth jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: A feeling of deep dread greets you as you stumble out of the gravcouch, strong enough to hold you still for a long moment, searching your surroundings for the source of your wariness. Nothing becomes apparent, only your fellow passengers waking up. Eventually you gather the resolve to pick yourself up and start moving, the feeling fading slowly as you progress through routine.

New arrivals will find messages spraypainted across their lockers telling them not to follow their tattoo numbers, and instead to find a room on Floors 001-010.

YOU͘ ̨WAKE̢ ̧UP ́IN DA̛RKN̢E̕SS̶

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

YÓU̴ ̧ĄRE NOT҉ ̷ALǪNE҉

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

I did! I still don't really like them, actually, but what can you do. Not that I would say no if they started giving us actual options.

[ She's still not a fan of the jumpsuit, surprise surprise. ]

A hurry? Maybe a little... [ She's got some people to look for, after all, but she's half afraid her fears of everyone she knows well on the ship will be gone. So, a small distraction wouldn't hurt. ] Were you stuck in the pods a long time? I know there were a few people who didn't wake up the last jump.

Were there? [He'd have thought he might have noticed that.] In all honesty, I'm... not entirely certain. I suppose I should check my messages.

[A little joke. No one leaves Ivan messages.]

If I was, did I miss anything terribly exciting? New space monsters?

[So he hasn't entirely lost the arch sense of humour, at least.]

[ She huffs out a laugh at that. ]

Probably a good idea, if you have anyone on here who missed you. [ She won't get into how she left a friend or two frantic texts they probably were really confused about. ] No new monsters, just normal ship stuff. Getting stuck in some kind of space cloud, things not working right. I think I prefer space monsters.

[ At least then it's something she can actually fight. Space ship repairs are not her forte. ]

I must have been out of it. I think I would remember a space cloud.

[He sighs, leaning a little against the lockers.]

What things didn't work right? Obviously the life support pulled through.

Apparently the whole ship came to a stop right in the middle of it. I think there was some damage, but I have no idea how bad...not that I'm an expert in ship damage.

[ What can she say, she needs to read a million books on this stuff in order to feel completely comfortable with it all.

She'll probably never feel comfortable with it. ]

Anyway, the whole thing is weird and kinda worrying. I mean, what happens if the ship stops working? Do we even have a back up plan to get everyone off? [ She blows out a frustrated breath as she pushes her hair back a bit. ] Probably questions I should ask someone in some department.

I am not terribly eager to find out the answers by practical experience, no.

[Or answers to questions like "Can vampires survive exposure to the void of space?" And "If not, what's happens when one dies a third time?"]

Then again, I'm not terribly confident in our shipmates' ability to make a primary plan, yet a backup.
