forty-third jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: As you emerge from the grav couches following the jump, the chill of the medical bay pales in comparison to the hollow feeling that settles deep within your chest. Grim and foreboding, the grip of isolation spreads through you like a gnawing void, as though you've been left behind. That nagging sensation of neglect that comes from someone turning their back on you only worsens as you move through your routines, leaving you feeling distant, disoriented, and unwanted.

New arrivals will find messages spray-painted in red across their lockers telling them not to follow their tattoo numbers, and instead to find a room on Floors 001-010.

YOU͘ ̨WAKE̢ ̧UP ́IN DA̛RKN̢E̕SS̶

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

YÓU̴ ̧ĄRE NOT҉ ̷ALǪNE҉

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

[Hiro looks over, blinking slowly.] Oh- Uh, okay?

Did someone- Someone else from these pod things write it there?

Yes. This is the forty third time this has happened, and some people on board have been here since the beginning.

[Fewer every jump]

The numbers on the tattoos mean we add an extra deck every jump. And that leaves us all too spread out to protect properly.
hirobotics: (the thing about that is...)

[That gets Hiro to look down toward where the tattoo is on his arm. It's covered by his hoodie now, but he can't help being hyper-aware of it.]

Oh... I guess that makes sense.

Isn't there some kind of security force or whatever? From whoever's in charge of this place? [That's how it works on TV, anyway. And really, that's Hiro's only frame of reference.]

Most of the original crew. The security force patrolling the corridors came from the pods. Other than the captain and first officer, none of the original crew remain on board. And even them we seldom see.
hirobotics: (down to consider it)

[He raises an eyebrow.] Seriously? Then how does anyone know what's going on around here?

[personal profile] bailedontheempire 2015-05-14 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
We largely have to work it out for ourselves. We have a network for disseminating information. Did you find your comm device?

[Because it's important]
hirobotics: (science work time)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-14 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
[At the mention of the comm device, Hiro can't even help himself; he smiles a little. It's a pretty neat looking smartphone, after all.] Yeah, I did.

So I guess everyone here has one, huh?

We do. You can transmit in text, audio or video. The network is largely internal, but there have been incidents of outside contact.

[And this seems like a moment for introductions, since he should clear one thing up]

I'm Bail Organa. I'm with the Communications department.
hirobotics: (the thing about that is...)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-15 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. [He'll definitely be fiddling with it a little later, then. Just to see what other options he has with it, if nothing else.]

Oh- Uh, I'm Hiro Hamada.

A pleasure to meet you.

I'm afraid this isn't the safest of places. But we manage.

[What choice do they have?]
hirobotics: (idk maybe?)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-19 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[A hand comes up to push through his hair in thought.] So I'm hearing. I guess you kind of have to, huh?

... You said you're with the Communications department, right? Does everyone here have some kind of job?
bailedontheempire: (Default)

[personal profile] bailedontheempire 2015-05-20 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone. But we do encourage people to join a department in order to help us all manage. Almost all of the original crew is absent. If we want fresh food or the ship to keep running properly, we need to take care of it ourselves.
hirobotics: (closer look please)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-20 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. Now that's interesting.]

Okay... So what does Communications do?
bailedontheempire: (Default)

[personal profile] bailedontheempire 2015-05-21 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
On a day to day basis we largely see to the ship's network. We also deal with any external contact, though that's a fairly rare occurrence.

[Okay and some monitoring and compilation of databases]
hirobotics: (you say what?)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-24 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[An eyebrow raises, curious.]

Wait a minute. You've actually had external contact? With what?
bailedontheempire: (Default)

[personal profile] bailedontheempire 2015-05-25 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Most recently from a group called DUPR claiming to be affiliated with the government here. They later came on board.
hirobotics: (processing information)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Did you guys play welcome wagon to them? Did they actually have something to do with this place, or was it all a lie?
bailedontheempire: (Default)

[personal profile] bailedontheempire 2015-05-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
There was... a great deal of dissent on that front. There are a few survivors still on board. A great deal is still unclear.
hirobotics: (hold on i'm focusing)

[personal profile] hirobotics 2015-05-26 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hiro frowns a little, his gaze dropping off to one side in thought.] So the place that kidnaps people doesn't like bringing strangers on board.

And those DUPR guys didn't really help clear anything up at all, huh? Are they still around?
