[Mystique's lips tighten, a line that seems to wobble between sympathy and dismissal. Ultimately, she settles on neither, in absence of more information. She shakes her head, sending blond hair quivering in every direction over her shoulders.]

You look like shit, for someone who doesn't remember anything worth crying about, [she observes.]

[uncurse]

What I lost, I didn't lose in the crash.

[ More distant than self-pitying, Emma can't help but feel like she ought to be used to this by now. Even though it wasn't Hook's choice to vanish, she's sure, it doesn't change the fact that he's one more in a long line of people who've inevitably left her on her own. ]

[The younger blonde considers this in silence for a long moment. Finally, one corner of her mouth quirks downward. Not that her sympathy is a very great prize; she's just rather stubborn about giving it away lately, selfish that way.] You lost someone, [she says. It isn't a question.]

Who was it?

[The question might seem presumptive, intrusive. But Mystique looks away when she asks it, and perhaps that is her way of showing sympathy too.]

[ In the event that that's not enough context, she adds after a beat, ] He was the only other person left, from my world. As far as I know, anyway.

[Perhaps surprisingly, this strikes a chord in Mystique. She thinks immediately of the moment her own memories ran back to her in a flood, not so very long ago. In her amnestic fugue, it hadn't occurred to her to be lonely, but after that it came like a fist in the chest. And then Charles. As vile as the memories of losing her foot had been, knowing that her brother was here, knowing who Erik was to her -- and she to him -- was like finding her center of gravity.

She'd be hard-pressed to say she feels sorrier for Emma than herself. But for a moment, it isn't actually a fucking race.]

I'm sorry, [she says anyway.] That's really shitty. I hope-- you find him. [Mystique doesn't honestly think that Emma will, but she means that when she says it, studying Emma's boots.]
