back to school, back to school
CHARACTERS: Carolyn Fry, Simon Tam, and YOU
LOCATION: Medbay!
WARNINGS: Who even knows with the people on this ship. Everything. Let's just go with everything.
SUMMARY: Space training! Learn why health is important! Doctors! "The story so far!" I am bad at setting up logs like this!
NOTES: FREE-FOR-ALL, go nuts.
[ Two hours after Carolyn's post is when the training starts, with Simon and Carolyn covering their respective subjects with as much patience as possible. Questions and discussions are welcome, as is mingling both before and after. Share what you know, learn what you don't know, remember that space and/or the ship could kill you, and meet people! ]

hello
You certainly seem to know a lot about all this.
oh my god they have the same haircut
Space is more or less my life.

[ empty and dangerous, but this has been all about making it less dangerous, so perhaps that's a little dull too. ]
Anyway. I wanted to ask you about space radiation.
no subject
[ But she shrugs. ] I love flying. I like seeing the planets and stations we dock at.
[ Of course, then Arthur says "space radiation" and Carolyn looks remarkably like someone's just kicked her in the stomach. ]
Simon covered that.

[ how he managed to not fall asleep, he's still not sure. force of will, he supposes, learnt from listening to geoffrey of monmouth talking the histories in long council meetings. ]
It's just, my manservant is a bit of an idiot, and apparently more superstitious than I gave him credit for, and he brings it up a lot.

all your burning medical questions.
1) Myths and misconceptions of space radiation. Spoiler alert: it is not slowly killing you don't worry.
2) Basic wound care and why antiseptic is important and why we don't use leeches anymore.
3) An overview of how to use the automated medical equipment.
4) A gentle reminder that if something is wrong, to see a doctor.
Afterwards, he makes himself available for questions. If you ever wanted to ask a medical professional about space radiation, now is your chance.

[ are you sure you're really a doctor, simon tam? because you're getting all the side-eye. between this and the lack of concern for space radiation, arthur's wondering where you got your credentials. ]
[ he crosses his arms. ]
How else are you meant to cure bad blood?
no subject
Bad blood is...well, it's an outdated concept. There really isn't good blood, or bad blood, just...bad things in blood.
[How exactly does one explain microscopic bacteria and viruses to the Ren Faire...]
And we don't need leeches to get rid of that, we have medicine instead.

"is this real life".
This is one of those times. This is real life.]
Well, we...don't have leeches on board, for one. On the other, losing blood is actually bad for you.
no subject
[ because seriously. ]
I'm not talking about blood-loss through an injury, obviously. But surely, a bleeding from the right point at the body, performed by a proper physician, just until there's a feeling of faintness...
[ he looks almost pleading, like he's trying to give simon a chance to redeem himself and say oh, yes, actually, that sort of bleeding is absolutely great for you. ]

I think so. It's a lot of information to get out there.
no subject
Yeah, it is. You did good, though.

Thanks. If you need me to do a follow up--

Until now- when the questions seem to have died down and people are milling out of medical or moving away from Simon. Emily approaches only when she's fairly sure no one is paying him attention any longer. ]
So, the automatic medical... things- are they only for cats who've gotten the broderick, or do they do other things too?
no subject
[The slang misses him entirely and he tilts his head slightly to the side, trying to parse the question.]
I, uh...they're programmed so that the Medbay can operate on a skeleton crew. You need someone with clearance to access the more complex functions, but--what kind of injury do you mean?

[Hey, it's a fair enough question. He shrugs.]
For something relatively simple like an appendectomy? You could program the system to perform the surgery without human assistance. I think I'd leave the decison up to the patient, though.
no subject
So what's considered complicated?

She'll get over it.
Like always, he's at the back of the room, listening but otherwise being his surly gruff self.... And mostly guarding the door in case Katniss tries to sneak off.]
godddd haymitch you're the worst
she won't attempt to leave, aware of that Haymitch won't allow her to (she knows him too well to think that) but neither is she going to be actively participating in this space training, no matter how useful it could be. it's also quite possible that the only reason she agreed to come was that Carolyn's responsible for it, though she won't admit as much. ]
