[ She can't help but look slightly surprised by that, as she sort of figured there might be something in his life that caused him to be like this - granted, prosecutor wasn't exactly the first thing that came to her mind. ]

Oh...[ she shrugs, her brow furrowing slightly as she slowly takes that and his reaction in. ]

We'll get home one day; you'll be able to do it again then. [ because there is always a need for some optimism in their lives she figured - even if she didn't leave much of it for herself. ]

I'm assuming that's where you learned your need to debate things though - in law school that is?

[He takes a drink to hide his melancholy expression at that reassurance. Usually he's the one chiding people for their pessimism; strange to be on the other side of it. She's...a lot better at it than he is, honestly.]

I never attended law school, but essentially yes. [He realizes belatedly that might sound quite bad to an ear unfamiliar with how things could work - ] In California, one can sit for the bar if one has studied under an attorney or judge directly. That was what I did, and indeed where I learned to do so.

[And maybe it's because she was so optimistic in that previous statement, but his manner when he speaks is actually rather kindly. Certainly not teasing, but in good humor.]

I don't believe they typically teach argumentation skills in architecture school, though.

[ She can't help but look slightly surprised and perhaps a little skeptical by that. Knowing she isn't fully aware of all the avenues needed to perhaps go into law, but she did assume you had to at least attend law school at some point - in her world that is.

That look though doesn't last long, as she can clearly see the sadness it does seem to cause, and even if she does tend to pry too much, she doesn't try to cause people any more pain than perhaps needed - and he obviously didn't need any more of it.

So she just smiles slightly, nodding some as she takes one long swig (making a small face at the taste) of her drink, stating: ]

Not exactly, no. [ a small shrug] But if I feel strongly enough about something, I'm not about to sit and keep my mouth shut and I will make sure my point is heard. [ a beat, her brow arching slightly in question ] You have to understand how that is?

[He shakes his head - not in denial, but in assurance that she need not be remotely defensive.]

Of course I understand. There's no question of that whatsoever. And no question, too, that you completely have the right to do so.

[He half lifts his hand, actually intending to pat her reassuringly on the shoulder - then he pushes that hand back into his pocket self-consciously. He's not that drunk yet.]

Indeed, if anything, you should be proud of doing so. You stand up for yourself; that's a very good thing.

[ Her weight shifts from one leg to the other, her brow arches slightly in curiosity as she works out her next few words. ]

Perhaps. [ a beat. ] But I'm also willing to take all sides into consideration when need be. [ which is said not exactly said as a dig but more as her subtle attempt to point out what she has seen from him and his lack of seeing all sides of things. ]

Sometimes seeing all sides only benefits you in the end, don't you think?

[His mouth turns down slightly in a frown at that - but he's got enough liquor in him (half a glass) that he doesn't turn immediately hostile.]

Madam, this seems to be turning decidedly didactic.

[ There's a faint smile that appears at the corner of her mouth in amusement over his reaction to that, shrugging slightly as she does. ]

Why though? We're just having a simple conversation here; I'm allowed to make my case for things, just as you are.

[His manner returns to being comparatively mild, now.]

Yet your argument is inherently fallacious. You say I am incapable of listening to others; if I am guilty of that of which you accuse me, then I will not listen to you no matter how sensible your argument is; if I am not fatally closed-minded, then your argument is unnecessary.

It's not meant to be - my argument that is. I'm just being honest here - you're allowed to take what I say with a grain of salt or with some consideration.

[ and she cant help but shrug slightly at that, her hand going to the back of her neck to rub as she worked out her next few words. ]

You know...In a sense, you're somewhat like me here. [ which does have her making a small face at that the admittance to her own insecurities here (she hated doing that after all) ] you're always wanting to prove your worth and that you're qualified for the things you set your mind to doing, that it almost makes you defensive and quick to attack...when you really don't have to be at times.

[ and sure, she might be making a wild assumption here and she sort of hoped he would prove her wrong. but from what she has seen of him over the network, that was how she perceived him at times and she had to understand that in some form - she was always trying to prove she belonged where she did after all. ]

[Something like that would be fine coming from someone like Jenna, even perhaps someone like Sirius if someone like Sirius were ever to say something like that - But when he doesn't know whether it's hostile or not, whether she's mocking him or not...

Even in spite of the liquor, he tenses a bit.]

While I respect your openness, I'll request that you don't try to psychoanalyze me, madam.

Psychoanalyze you? [ she can't help but frown slightly at that, her brow furrowing in response. ]

I'm just trying to understand who you are and get to know you, Edgeworth, nothing more.

[If he were altogether sober, his face would be a mask of disapproval. In this state, instead, it's a mask of discomfort.]

There is, with respect, little enough to understand. I'm a lawyer; that's all. [Uncomfortably:] But I thank you for your regard, that you are...searching for more.

[ She just frowns deeply at that, simply shaking her head in response, letting her actions seem a bit more exaggerated due to the amount of alcohol running through her system. ]

There is more to me than being an Architect, so why can't there be more to you than being a Lawyer? [ A small shrug of her shoulder, her smile curling slightly at the corner of her mouth. ]

Hasn't anyone ever wanted to know what makes you tick?

[ Because clearly she does - assuming it would help her understand him and his actions at times. ]

[And he drinks to the bottom of the glass, trying to find in the end of that drink some remedy for his sudden and deep feelings of awkwardness and discomfort. There's none, so he looks to the bar for a refill. Perhaps a second might help.

Besides which, that allows him enough time that his answer can be comparatively straightforward - ]

Not particularly, no. That is, generally speaking, not really relevant for most people's purposes.

[ The look that slowly starts to spread across her face at that is one more of confusion mixed with a slight bit of sympathy. She has always been of the opinion that people needed to know more than just what was on the surface to really understand people and make judgment about them. So no one taking the time to get to know him outside of the whole lawyer thing -- well it was slightly sad. ]

Hasn't anyone ever tried to just be your friend? [ she asked with a small shrug of her shoulders as she turned back towards the bar, gaining wichita's attention as she did so they could have another round.

(if getting him more intoxicated would help him to open up, she was going to try what she could to help it along) ]

[He shakes his head; his answer is slightly self-deprecating.]

Certainly - when I was nine years old.

[He watches the glass being refilled with an expression that's trying to be wry but also trying to be melancholy. Unfortunately, the face that results is quite unpleasant - more than anything, he looks a bit constipated.]

And then I grew up. Come now, you shouldn't act so surprised; would you want to try to be my friend?

[He picks up that glass and drinks again. It's clear enough that the liquor is hitting him rather hard.]

[ Slightly intoxicated or not, she can't help but feel bad for him here, and a small frown settles on her lips because of it. ]

People have friends when they're adults too, Edgeworth. [ a long sigh escapes her at that, as she can't help but take yet another long swig of her drink, her eyes never leaving him as she mentally tries to understand why he thinks the way he does.
(yeah, she feels bad for him now.) ]

Im making the effort to try to get to know you here, Edgeworth - can't you just accept the fact; people would like to know you outside of you always debating with them?

You say that, but you say that without knowing me.

[Another drink. The more he swallows, the less uncomfortable he feels - and even so he does sort of feel as though he might regret all this later on, is somewhat cognizant of the fact that he's speaking like an imbecile...But it also feels a bit good to be frank.]

Getting to know me doesn't make people want to be my friend. I'm not really...You know. But you're being very nice with all of this. I didn't take you for being so nice.

[And that's said with a kindly nod of his head.]

[ The look she gives him at that, clearly is more unsure than anything - like she just doesn't understand his train of thought with all of this now. ]

Why would you think that? [ a long beat, her brow furrowing as she shakes her head in confusion. ] I'll let you in on a little secret, Edgeworth. I'm friends or I try to be friends with all sorts. And just because I tend to argue my point doesn't mean I'm a dick.

[ at least she doesn't think it does. ]

Wouldn't you rather me get to know you, then judge you for being a complete and utter dick just because you're a lawyer?

Oh - no; please don't misunderstand. I'm not, erm, calling you a bad person. I've always thought you've seemed like a perfectly nice person. Forceful, to be certain, but I quite frankly rather like that.

[He gives her a vague pat on the shoulder.]

And this quite confirms it. My thanks, indeed, for confirming it.

[ Her nose just crinkles slightly at that, a small shake of her head in confusion still. ]

So why don't you want friends than?

Well -

[He pushes his hair out of his eyes. His face is comparatively unguarded, now; he actually sort of looks his age.]

It's not that I do not want them. Not precisely. It's simply...not a good idea for me to have them, first, and I'm not...the sort of person who has friends, besides. Really, you shouldn't be worrying for me.

[ Oh god, she has never wanted to come across as someone that feels sorry for someone, but after what Edgeworth just said, it's hard to deny the fact; she feels bad for him.

And now she was just letting out a long sigh, her hand going back to her neck, rubbing, as she slowly attempted to figure out what she wanted to say to it all. ]

Why isn't it a good idea? [ she asked with a clear confused as to it all. (he wasn't a criminal like all the others she had come to know, was he?) ]

Because I think it's almost human nature to want people to understand you and to have care about you.

Because being acquainted with me invites...danger. Because I've enemies, and I'll always have enemies, and that makes for disaster for anyone about whom I care.

[He furrows his brow, very slightly - but not in self-pity; rather, he looks concerned for her, for the faint signs of discomfort she's exhibiting.]

Are you all right? I'm...I shouldn't be making you stand. You should sit.

[ His sudden concern had her laughing perhaps more than she would have liked right then, but the fact that he thought something might be wrong with her, only had her reacting almost instantly to him. ]

I'm perfectly fine, Edgeworth. [ perhaps a bit tipsy, but still fine. and she couldn't help but shake her head some as she moved her hands about, almost as if she thought that would help prove that she was. ]

I'm just trying to talk to you and get to know you - that's all.
