The oxygen gardens take up a good portion of space on the Tranquility, as they help keep the ship's air and water supply pure, recycled, and filtered. The entire complex is bigger than four football stadiums stacked on top of one another, and the first level is actually much larger than the other three, extending for a good half mile in any direction. Each level is lit with fluorescent growlights, built into the ceiling high above floors themselves. Extending past these lights, on the ceilings (and in the walls) are extensive sprinkler systems. Floors two to four receive timed "rainfall" once a week, and are spritzed lightly otherwise. Level one is provided with a complicated mesh of sprinklers for seed plots, and the hydroponic systems provide the plants with irrigation.

Well... I guess so. But it is a really big difference; ask a guy hoppin' on a freight train and somebody on a passenger train and they'll sound like completely different vehicles.

It's like askin' people about Kuims. If they like 'em, it's a great sorta thing. But if they don't, then well, they sound like somethin' you'd never want to taste.

[Shrugs--and doesn't quite realize that Firo doesn't know what a kuim is]

[He scratches his head.]

What's a "Kuim"?

[His ears prick forward, startled, and then lower as if chastised.]

Ah, sorry, it's a food from my home. I guess you don't have 'em where you're from?

Not that I've heard of, but it's a pretty big place. What're they like?

[And why does Bardo make it sound like they're some sort of controversy?]

They're like a fruit!

[Beams, all perking ears and smiles.]

So do you like 'em? You make it sound like there's some sorta debate over whether they're good or not. I think alcohol's the only thing back home like that that gets people so worked up.

Ah--I meant it only as a metaphor, sorry if I built it into something grand. [laughs] But yes, they're my favorite.

Oh, no, no...

[Really, Firo, a debate over fruit? Other worlds are weird, but not that weird, even if they are populated by cat people.]

Neat. You ever found any here?

[If there is some secret stash of home food Firo'd love to know.]

[Yeah well his world is totally normal!!! Firo's is the one with earless cats and flying trains and things.]

There's some in the gardens, but they're not grown enough to bear fruit just yet.

Really? Were they just there, or did you plant 'em?

I didn't, but I don't know if they were here with the ship originally.

Huh. Well, who knows how things even get here?

It'd be neat to see 'em; what do they look like?

[Normally Firo'd dismiss a hunt for otherwordly fruit as silly and trivial, but it's not like he has much else to do.]

Magic maybe. [He laughs, only half serious.]

They're round and purple when they're ripe, about this big [He holds his hands out and gestures, roughly the size of a large apple.] once they start flowering I can find you and show them to you, perhaps?

[He understands just how much even a trivial little thing like this could offer in terms of distraction, clearly.]

That'd make about as much sense as anything else.

[Firo blinks then breaks into a smile.]

Really? You wouldn't mind?

Of course not, though maybe I could trade them for stories of your home? [His smile is half teasing, half curious.] It seems so very different from my own.

[He grins brighter at the offer and can hardly nod his head quick enough.]

That sounds fair! It already seems like they're really different, from what you told me.

[That quick assent has Bardo relaxing and nodding in return.]

It does, but that just makes the stories better I think!

Maybe. It'd almost be like a fairy tale or somethin', if you're into that stuff.

A fairy tale? [Headtilt.] What is that?

No way... You don't even have those where you're from?

It's a kind of story, like about dragons and all that mythical stuff. They're popular with kids and stuff where I come from. Pretty much everybody's heard at least a couple.

Oh--well, we have stories like that. I haven't heard 'em called fairy tales before.

[He rubs his chin.]

What do you call 'em? The name just seems to work, you know?

Stories? Myths? [A lighthearted shrug.] I don't know what fairy means?

You don't? They're like these little magic people with wings.

[He holds his thumb and index finger about an inch apart.

Realizing that it probably sounds crazy, he waves his hands defensively and adds:]

I mean, they're not real or anything. People just make up stories about 'em. But, well... some people do think they're real...
