[ mumbled partly under his breath, ]

As if you aren't already irritable most of the time.

[He scowls - ]

Insults hardly seem productive.

[ siiigh. ] It wasn't so much an insult as an observation.

[ and, going back to fiddling with edgeworth's pen: ]

I don't understand why you seem so intent on rejecting another person's attempts to portray you in a positive light. It may be reasonable for you to be so -- humble about yourself, but what I said was neither harmful, nor a lie.

[jurisimpudent]

[Edgeworth breaks eye contact with Soysauce, staring resentfully down at the surface of the desk.]

The only thing I've accomplished today is falling asleep on the job and being comparatively offensive. How, therefore, have I earned kind words?

[shoyu]

[ a little impatiently, looking up from where he's twirling the pen in his hands. ]

You know fair well that I'm not only talking about today. Please don't act so thick, Mister Edgeworth -- it's rather difficult to believe, coming from you.

[jurisimpudent]

Fine. What have I done ever in your witnessing, that I've earned such kindnesses.

[shoyu]

Mmm -- [ after a brief moment of thought, sounding a little more chipper, ] For starters, I still regularly use the communication device keyboard that you gave to me?

[jurisimpudent]

[He frowns.]

So you should thank Dr. Brink for that. He's the one who made it.

[shoyu]

Ah. To be honest, though, I wouldn't have known such a thing was possible -- so it was all thanks to you, really. If not in construction, at least in being kind enough to get something of that sort made in my stead.

[ and then he beams at edgeworth because that's irrefutable, right? ]

I simply - wanted to increase efficiency. [He's flustered enough by that grin that he stammers slightly and glares down at the table.] It wasn't out of kindness. And you'd have figured out that it was possible before too long, besides.

[shoyu]

[ and then edgeworth is just going to find soysauce a finger poking right at the tip of his nose, soysauce leaning forward against the desk with a slightly reprimanding frown. ] No! It was something you did that was very kind. No arguing that fact. I won't allow you to question it.

[jurisimpudent]

Wh -

[Edgeworth leans back, rubbing at the tip of his nose, blinking in owlish surprise.]

But it wasn't!

[shoyu]

Yes, it was! [ lips pressed together in a small pout, soysauce sits back in his chair with arms crossed. ] And you'll either accept that it was, or I'll make it a public question that other people can vote on. And I know that they'd agree with me!

[jurisimpudent]

They will not!

[He's regaining his composure a little bit - ]

People will not vote saying I'm kind. I have a reputation.

[shoyu]

Is that a challenge, then?

[ he leans forward in his chair, looking up straight into edgeworth's face -- staring intensely at him. ]

Shall we actually test this out? Because I believe I'm right.

[jurisimpudent]

Hmph.

[He crosses his arms.]

How should we do so, with the network down?

[shoyu]

... oh.

[ a slightly wide-eyed blink before soysauce ducks his head a little sheepishly. ]

I -- wasn't expecting you to actually take that challenge, to be honest.

[jurisimpudent]

[He lifts his chin defiantly.]

You shouldn't have issued it, then.

[shoyu]

Mmm, well. I just ...

[ a thoughtful little hum as he rests his chin against the desk. ]

I thought it would be obvious that most people would agree you're a kind person, despite all your talk of laws and rules and other strict things. Though perhaps -- it would be nice for you to actually hear it from other people, so maybe we should actually make this test happen?

[jurisimpudent]

[That leaves him flustered enough that he manifests his dissatisfaction with a frustrated thump of his fist on the desk.]

Sir, you are laboring under a significant misapprehension! I am not kind in the least. Not remotely. And if I do good, it is because of the...laws and rules and other strict things. Not because of some innate goodness. And if people respond saying that I am kind, then that is purely because - they also misunderstand me.

[shoyu]

... there's no reason to get so upset. [ a small pout as he rolls his head to rest his cheek against the desk's surface, looking up a little balefully from that position. ]

I still don't understand why you seem so offended that I think of you as a nice, decent, averagely kind person. Do you think that it's -- bad for a person to be kind? Or is it just that you feel you aren't allowed to be kind, so you're angry when I suggest it?

Of course I'm allowed to be kind, and it's not a bad thing to be so. I'm just not. And I'm "angry" because you're saying things that aren't true.
