SUMMARY: Open log for SEC for the month of December.
NOTES: This is open to members of SEC and also members of the public who want a bit of SEC-siness in their lives. [For just a moment, Edgeworth's brow furrows a bit; he looks confused and uncertain, and so he covers by lifting his towel to his face and blotting the scant sweat there.]

That's a generous offer.

[He lowers the towel; when he looks up, his expression is a bit less frozen and odd.]

My ultimate goal is to have enough physical competence that I myself can patrol if need be, as that is Tyke's focus. At the moment, though, I'm still trying to learn basic skills.

[Blake shrugs.] We're on the same team - we all benefit when one of us improves.

[That's true enough, and sure, okay, maybe Blake feels a little obligated to Edgeworth in particular. There's a lot he hasn't figured out yet, that much is obvious.]

What's your workout looking like? Cardio, strength training, do you have a sparring partner?

[jurisimpudent]

I...swim a great deal - forty-five minutes per day - and exercise in the gym to build core strength.

[Does, in short, what he's been told to do.]

I spar with Tyke, also, when she has time. Though - Well. [He shakes his head slightly; obviously, none of them have seen so very much of her this month.]

[Blake nods vaguely.] You might want to try jogging, if you want some variation. Back home, I did a lot of bike-riding, too. [Too bad that's not really feasible here, his body language says.]

And once you know the basics, it's good to have more than one sparring partner, too. Everyone fights a little differently, it can help to have people who can surprise you - make you think on your feet.

[He looks down slightly, though he nods.]

Indeed, sir; I know that's the case. I fear at this point, however, anyone who sparred with me would get rather little from it in return.

[But he looks up afterwards - ] But is jogging not harmful to one's knees?

You never know. Sometimes untrained people can come up with interesting ideas.

[His lips twitch a little and he shrugs.] Not if you do it right, and in moderation. Finding decent shoes might be a problem here, though.

[He drapes the towel about his neck, looking at Blake with curiosity.]

What do you mean, interesting ideas?

Well, it brings a totally different perspective, learning the rules after... not having any. I didn't have any formal training until I got into the police academy, but I'd been fighting kids bigger than me for a long time before that.

[Edgeworth narrows his eyes slightly. He's absorbed enough by the conversation that he forgets to be afraid of Blake.]

Forgive me again. But why were you...fighting?

[learnedtosmile]

Because I was a stupid, angry kid and I grew up in a tough neighborhood in a tough city. For the most part, you were either a bully or you were a target.

[jurisimpudent]

I see.

[He looks down. There's always that guilt associated with being the one who was adopted. Who suffered through fencing lessons instead of fending off bullies.]

The social workers shouldn't have permitted that.

[learnedtosmile]

There weren't nearly enough of them to even begin to keep all the homeless orphan kids safe and in line. And that's assuming all of them weren't burned out or had stopped really caring years ago.

It's like saying a chain link fence should be able to stop an avalanche.

[jurisimpudent]

[He shakes his head, though he still speaks quietly and doesn't quite look at Blake.]

I will confess, sir, that I immensely dislike that metaphor you've used. A chain link fence would never be expected to stop an avalanche, because that's not what it's designed for. But social workers are supposed to keep their charges safe and cared-for. That is what the system is for: to take care of those who cannot defend themselves.

[Blake has to roll his eyes - Edgeworth is possibly the only person he's met who actually takes offense to analogies he doesn't think are correct. Instead of, you know, actually engaging with the argument.]

All right, fine. Imagine a levy, that you haven't spent money to repair in twenty or thirty years, and you expect that levy to keep back flood waters. You'll probably be disappointed.

[jurisimpudent]

You're missing my point.

[He looks up, lines around his mouth.]

My point is that the disrepair is unacceptable.

[learnedtosmile]

Then there's something we agree on. [He shrugs and turns, looking for his duffel bag, to get a clean towel out.]

[jurisimpudent]

Right.

[There's something little and stupid and desperate in Edgeworth which feels painfully disappointed. He looks away and stands up and mumbles awkwardly:]

I should stop...monopolizing this bench, I suppose.

[And he turns and picks up a clean towel from his pile of items, cleaning the bench meticulously.]

You're not monopolizing anything. [He watches Edgeworth for a moment, a slight frown between his eyes. Then he looks around, spotting a mat leaning up against a wall.]

Show me what Tyke's teaching you.

[jurisimpudent]

[Edgeworth looks over at him and then at that mat; then he straightens up, his brow slightly furrowed. He takes in a breath, then decides - God, to hell with it; like Blake had said, what benefits one benefits others, and keeping this secret will be of no use, no matter how afraid he is of being scorned for it - ]

Very well. I should forewarn - some of the techniques I use are centered around my, erm - telekinesis.

[learnedtosmile]

[That catches him by surprise, in the process of dragging the mat out to the floor.] Really.

[He just has a hard time imagining Edgeworth being able to do that kind of thing. Some of the other people around here, sure, okay. But Edgeworth? Really?]

So what can you do with that? Can you throw a person around?

I can.

[He nods once, relaxing slightly when he's not...well, subject to scorn.]

With some difficulty; I've only been training it recently. I could also hold them in place and manipulate objects from a distance.

[learnedtosmile]

That could definitely be useful. [Assuming he has good control over it, of course. Mat down, Blake steps onto it, considering.] So that time I punched you, you could've just... sent me flying?

[jurisimpudent]

[Edgeworth wrinkles his nose very slightly for just a moment before he responds. It's supposed to be an elegant expression of dismissal; it just ends up looking weird and uncomfortable.]

Most likely not; I doubt it was strong enough at that point. I suppose I could have pushed you to the ground, however.

[learnedtosmile]

Huh. [Blake finds that interesting - in some way, it's offering a slightly different facet to Edgeworth, that even in the heat of that moment, he could've done something like that, and chose not to for whatever reason. So then:] Why didn't you?

[jurisimpudent]

[He wishes he could offer some grand, noble reason. That he deliberately held himself back out of principle. The real answer is much more embarrassing:]

It simply didn't occur to me. [He shrugs as he approaches the mat.] I'm glad you maintained self-control.
