eighteenth jump;

CHARACTERS: any and all
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond
WARNINGS: maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: Keeping up with the tradition and copy pasted like always from the last one

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

[Edgeworth doesn't understand people, generally speaking. Their thoughts and deeds are ambiguous to him. He understands criminals, yes, without question, having spent most of his life studying their psychology, but regular people, and their emotions, are far from transparent to him.

Not really ambiguous, though, that James quite hates him.

Justifiably so. Even so, some stupid hope that was kindled by Sirius' unambiguous forgiveness is quite thoroughly quashed.]

I'm glad to see you're all right after the jump. That was all I was interested in.

[And that would have been sufficient, and he'd have slunk off with his tail between his legs - except that Pess has evidently decided that James Potter is the most fascinating person she's ever encountered; she's dug her claws in and is resisting being pulled away with all her stocky shiba inu sporting dog strength.]

All right, time to go -

[ it's not even so much that James hates him - because it takes quite a bit for James to hate anyone, let alone someone who his best friend actually likes. no, James doesn't hate Edgeworth, he's just confused as to which side he's supposed to take. and maybe, just maybe, he's taking the 'over protective of remus' side for right now, until he thinks he should act otherwise.

which basically means: beyond sirius introducing them, and giving him a good word, james doesn't have anything to go on. only what he saw in that network post. ]

You don't have to check on me. [ James doesn't need checking up on, outside of his friends. thanks. but then all bets are off for their conversation, because there's a dog, quite an adorable one, and James is as close to the epitome of 'a dog person' as you can get.

so he's not going to be able to hold back his smile, and he's going to drop right on down to hold his hand out to Pess - letting her check his scent before he tried to pet her. ]

She yours?

[He'll find it hard to pet her, unfortunately. The moment James' hand gets in her proximity she starts dancing in sheer joy, jumping back and forth and twisting around to try to lick said hand and then twisting back so that James can have good access, turning into such a dervish that he won't be able to get a good fix on her. He will, however, get plenty of slobber on her hands.

She's a distinct contrast to her owner, who's gotten an embarrassed and unhappy expression on his face, underlined by the consistently mulish set to his jaw. He looks away from the display, uncomfortable. But he doesn't pull Pess away; his hand on the leash is gentle.]

She is. I've had her perhaps six months now. [A pause, and awkwardly - ] Her name is Pess.

[ James doesn't mind in the least, using both his hands to both follow her around in circles, getting a hand on her back to pet her every other moment or so. After a few moments he does get his arms around her, just to pull her close and laughs a little, letting her lick his hands and face. ]

Well, Pess, it's nice to meet you.

[ He lets go of his hold on her, letting her jump around if she'd like, still smiling and playing around with her. It's sad that this is enough to slowly start earning brownie points from James, but it is. Just one or two, maybe, but it's something. ]

Here -

[Edgeworth steps forward, offering the leash. The expression on his face is earnest and solemn.]

Would you like to take her for a little while?

[ james pauses, a little confused as he looks up to him. when his brain catches up, james shakes his hand and stands. ]

Nah, I mean. She's yours. It's fine. I've got one of my own, anyway.

[ technically two, but hey. sirius dog jokes are the best. ]

Oh. I didn't know that.

[He steps back again, looking off to the side.]

Perhaps in that case we could set something up where they could play. Pess is quite social, but I fear I don't...get her out enough.
