You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.
There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

[ it's his first jump - his first jump knowing what's going on, anyway - and his mother's gone. it's a realization that comes gradually, and it sinks in with a weight that leaves no room for doubt. his first thought is to find stiles, but stiles isn't anywhere to be seen, either - but his scent is fresh, so at least there's that.

he goes through the routine of the jump easily (just like after a lacrosse game, right?) and quietly. even though he's distracted, it's hard not to notice james making the rounds. part of him just wants to get out of here, honestly. the other part could do with something to keep his mind off things; if stiles doesn't want to talk, he won't, so his current option is going back to his room to sulk.

wizards, right. wizards are distracting. he's just closing his locker when james makes another pass, and with some effort he benches the wallowing for later. ]

... a wand? Seriously?

[ it's not meant as an insult; he's genuinely surprised. also hello. ]

[ James is a little distracted, so sorry for that Scott. he kind of jumps, but not too much, seeing - and recognizing - Scott from that video before. from his talk about werewolves and wizards and all things James knows about.

which means he's got to latch onto that, because at least he knows what he's talking about with that. ]

Yup. [ no offense taken, just an easy smile as he stops fiddling with it. holds it in his hand proper. ] What else would I use?

[ which might be slightly rhetorical, but scott offers a shrug as he mulls over what he's seen in movies. ]

Your hands? [ then, as if this is an amazing idea: ] Or a staff.

[ way cooler than a little wand, bro. it's mostly a joke, and he's back to legitimate questions a second later. ] Does everyone have one where you're from?

Staff's are too old school for me. Kind of need a beard to pull it off, you know? Plus, hard to carry around. Cumbersome.

[ wow scott come on. does he look like a gandalf to you? ]

And it takes a pretty powerful wizard to pull off spells without a wand. I can do a few, but nothing big. [ just, you know, turning into a stag. like he said, nothing big. ] And yeah, you get one before you go to school. I mean, all wizards do, and witches, but not muggles. No need for a wand when you can't do magic, right?

[ casually spinning his wand around his fingers through this whole conversation, too. ]

[ yes, right, obviously. why are you talking as if anything you're saying actually makes real sense, james. ]

[ and this time, he is actually judging a bit. that does not sound like a friendly word. ]

Uh, yeah. Or non-magic folk, but that's a mouthful.

[ OH GOD CASUAL 60s RACISM IT KILLS THE MUN INSIDE because james really doesn't see an issue with it. ]

Being weird isn't necessarily bad. It's a lot more bloody interesting than being normal, that's for sure.

[ suddenly I can't even remember if James would know about Scott. Remus told him about Derek and Erica and Isaac, but not Scott. ]

'sides, it's only weird cause we have to keep it secret.

[ and excuse you, they have plenty of nicknames for magic folk too. wizards, witches, squibs, and then the less favorable ones like pure-blood, and...well. james' consciousness doesn't even want to go into that. ]

Hey, normal is underrated.

[ but that's probably just personal bias talking. scott would kill to be normal (kind of almost did, theoretically). either way, this is shifting into unintentionally personal territory. he doesn't seem bothered, but he does casually steer it elsewhere. ]

So you have to use a wand. What's the coolest spell you can do with it?

Underrated? [ well that's something James doesn't hear every day.

That'd depend on what you want to see. Can change things into something different, make things fly, appear at will, I can create and destroy and what have you.

[ casual wave of his hand. with all this power at his finger tips, simply asking the coolest spell is just too broad. it's like asking an artist what their favorite piece is. ]
