eighteenth jump;

CHARACTERS: any and all
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond
WARNINGS: maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: Keeping up with the tradition and copy pasted like always from the last one

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

[She doesn't respond to his question, and instead clings hold of the fact that he must know what happens to her. But she can't bring herself to outright ask him, and instead just states her biggest fear as simply as she can.]

Something told me that I was gonna die in battle. Doctor said not to listen, but the thing is? I think it was right.

[Her voice cracks at the end, and she looks down and away. She has to focus on the positives. She's alive here, Jack's here with her. Everything will be okay in the end, she has to remind herself of that. Slowly, she looks back up and over at Jack, giving a curt nod.]

So yeah, guess that's when I'm from.
51stcentury: (comfort kiss)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-05-10 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jack can't help himself. He has to step forward and wrap his arms around her again, press a kiss to the side of her head, because she's being so brave, but he knows her, and he can tell that she's terrified. The truth of the matter is, she does die in the Battle of Canary Wharf, but not in the way she thinks she's going to. Only on paper.] I can't tell you what happens, Rose. You know that. I tell you, I could rip a hole in the universe by changing the future, all because you subconsciously remembered me telling you something right here, right now and did something differently than how you did back when I lived through it. But you've gotta trust me, okay?

[He pulls back, rubbing her shoulders with his hands. And it hurts him to say the next words, but he's got to give her something to hold on to:] Would the Doctor ever let anything bad happen to you?
refusing: (fear her)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-05-10 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know.

[She whispers when he informs her of why he can't tell her. She knows about spoilers, about timelines crossing, about all that. She's seen the Reapers, she's seen what happens when she tampers with changing fixed points. But she does trust Jack, and she trusts the Doctor, even if she doesn't always trust herself. Somehow, she'll get through everything just fine. So she sucks it up and when she looks up to make eye contact with Jack, she smiles.]

No, course he wouldn't. [And she says that with all the faith in the world, and then some. And when she speaks of Jack, she has the same conviction.] And neither would you.
51stcentury: (it's gonna be okay smile coat)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-05-10 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[It would be a lie to say that Jack isn't used to people having this sort of staggering amount of faith in him. Everyone who worked for him at Torchwood does, or at least did, at one point. It's almost overwhelming, because Jack doesn't know if he can live up to it. Of course he'd never willing let anything happen to Rose. But he didn't willingly let anything happen to Tosh or Owen, either. Didn't willingly let it happen to Ianto. And still they all died. He knows that he can't keep thinking that way, that it'd just be an endless spiral of past regrets. He's just got to do everything in his power now to make sure it doesn't happen again. To any of the people that he loves. Even if he has let them down in the past.

With Rose, at least, it's different. Even in his time, he knows that he's done his best to protect her, and his best in her case was enough. So he nods in response to her words, and smiles back at her.]

Neither would I. Not then and certainly not now. [He winks at her.] Cross my heart.
refusing: (playful)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-05-10 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[How could she stay sad and focused on negative things, with Jack here with her again? Jack, who makes her smile and laugh and got her to help make the Doctor dance again? So she takes his wink and his cross my heart, and she just laughs. Because what else is there to do, when you're trapped on a spaceship with an old friend that you can't believe you get to see again?

Using her index finger, she reaches up and draws an x over where his heart would be, a signal that she'll hold him to his words. Not that she needs to do that, she knows he'll hold himself to them all on his own.
]

Oh, I'm so glad I've got you. Really, it's...it's perfect.

[With a playful wink of her own, she takes a step over to stand at his side, and links her arm in his.]

Come on, Captain, let's go find us some fun.
51stcentury: (flirty smile)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-05-11 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jack grins and steps forward. He really should send Ianto some sort of message or something letting him know he's run into someone. He will in a moment. The fact that he left his dirty towel in his locker with his greatcoat should be clue enough that he hasn't disappeared and instead has gone off wandering with an old friend. Besides, talking to Ianto about this is going to bring up a lot of ghosts. He'll deal with those later. For now, he's got to put on a bright smile and be the Captain Jack she knows him to be.]

So. Has anyone explained anything about this place to you yet? I figure you can recognize the inside of a spaceship when you see one.
refusing: (are you there god? it's me rose)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-05-11 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Just that there's no way off, but there's just gotta be. Doesn't make sense, if there's a way on, not to have a way out.

[Then again, Jack's been here for over a year now. Either it's a really great spaceship, or there's definitely no way out. Her hand that's on Jack's arm grips hold a little tighter at that realization.]

So...guess I probably need to learn a bit more, yeah. [She laughs at herself, and although it comes out sounding a bit emptier than her usual good spirits, it's an attempt to cling hold of the good old days.]

What're we supposed t'do here all day long? Get a job, settle down and just wait?
51stcentury: (goggles explanation)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-05-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Jack's been there for a year, yeah. But he really hasn't been trying to get off either. How do you tell someone you love that you don't want to get off a veritable hell hole of a ship and back home because there's nothing left for you back at home anymore? She doesn't even know about his condition yet, let alone anything else about his life. So he doesn't tell her that part, not right now. He tightens his arm, squeezing her hand against him, supporting, before he speaks up.]

There are jobs. I wouldn't exactly say that 'settle down' are the right words. Nothing about this place is all that peaceful or relaxing. It's not a vacation cruise. I think those of us that have traveled with the Doctor are a little more prepared for the type of stuff this ship throws our way, if you catch my drift.
refusing: (bet you five quid I'm better than you)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-05-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Her mouth drops open a bit as she certainly does catch his drift, and she wonders just what all he's seen and done in his time here. She's glad to hear that things aren't going to necessarily be boring or like life back home. It's enough to put a bounce to her step, anyway.]

Well yeah, we're always gonna be prepared for anything. Guess he's trained us pretty well, huh?

[Which makes her take pause, because she just made them sound like the Doctor's pets. Which they definitely aren't, so she wrinkles up her nose in annoyance.]

Okay, forget I said that. We're better than that, definitely not trained or anything. Just...experienced. What kind of job could I do, though? Don't really have much experience, as far as all that goes.

[She pauses, head tipping off to the side to lean up against him as she laughs at how awful she is when it comes to real world things like jobs.]

I'll just go work with you, I figure you've gotten involved since you've been here so long. That, and you're just not the type to sit around day in and day out.

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-06-01 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[They're his 'companions'. Which is almost as bad as pets in some regards. But they shouldn't dwell on that for too long. There are loads of things that they as humans will always have a much better grasp on than the Doctor will, as Jack has found out over the years, even as an immortal human.]

Hell no I'm not the kind to sit around all day. Used to work in the gunnery with Kirk. You'll probably be hearing some announcement or another from him at some point soon, he's sort of the unofficial but widely-accepted captain around these parts. I didn't feel like I was doing all that much good there though so I moved on to security.

[He turns, cocking his head at her.] It's pretty exciting when there's something going down, but otherwise there's just a lot of patrolling the halls. You win some, you lose some, yeah? [He smiles.] I don't know whether you're really the type to do all that much enforcing though. I mean, I know you're tough and all, but. Then again, no one would suspect the cute little blonde girl... [He smiles wider.]
refusing: (young and wild and free)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-06-02 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Never ever. You know better, though.

[She agrees with him, her smile becoming something much more proud of herself and a little mischievous. No one ever suspects her of being much of anything, which isn't really a problem when she's actually putting some thought into patrolling the halls.]

There's not a big hurry to pick something and start work right away, is there? I don't mind it, but I figure I might wanna be a bit particular this time around, do something that means a bit more than just working in a shop.

[She stops walking for a few seconds, a bit taken aback by how easy it really is to just fall into this new place and assume she's going to work and settle down while she tries to find a way out. She tries to shake it off, but can't help but look a little guilty about the fact she's actually considering it at all.]
51stcentury: (cheezy fake smile)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-06-02 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Heck, you don't even need a job if you don't want one. Me, I'd get bored though. [His whole life before coming on board the Tranquility, for over a century really, had been Torchwood. Either being an agent of Torchwood or in the end, being in charge of it. And even before that, he had his cons, and then before that, his work with the Time Agency, and before that... Well, there really hadn't been a time in his life where Jack hadn't kept himself busy in some regard. And it's really just as well. Especially now, when his mind is prone to melancholy whenever he gives himself too much time to think.]

You know me. Not really the type to want to sit still. There's no hurry to figure things out, though. You've got the time to figure it out for yourself.
refusing: (everything will be just fine)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-06-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
But it's nice, having things be done in a hurry. [It's a slight whine, and there's even a brief moment of pouting to go along with it. She's not one to be in that frame of mind for very long, at least, and it's over as soon as it comes.]

I spent nineteen years back home not having anything figured out. I kinda wanna figure as much out as possible in this place.

[She nudges him, digging her elbow into his side a bit.]

Don't you dare say anything about my being too young to care about any of this, either.
51stcentury: (cheezy fake smile)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-06-25 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)

[And Jack spent over a century in Cardiff waiting for the Doctor to return for him. He didn't like waiting, but he learned how to be patient and to make the most of his time while he did. He doesn't say that to her, but...]

Far be it from me to comment on a lady's age. [Jack winks at her.] Besides. Then I'd have to comment on mine. [And he is so old, Rose. You have no idea. He smiles wide, but there's just a hint of false humor to it.]

refusing: (don't even think about it)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-07-02 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
What, and then you're gonna have to joke about how you're too old for me?

[She plays around, making a face like that would just break her heart and offend her entirely. She even pulls a pretty decent puppyface, before laughing.]

Dunno if I could go on, knowing we don't stand a chance.
51stcentury: (big smile)

[personal profile] 51stcentury 2013-07-12 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're willing to accept the fact that there are those out there who might protest that I am for you, then I don't see what the problem is.
refusing: (tease)

[personal profile] refusing 2013-07-17 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've always been willing to accept that. It's you that never got with the program!
