[ When Thranduil relaxes beneath his hands, Aragorn bites off a sigh of relief. He wasn't sure if the effects of the herb will still work with a wound like this, without the touch of Morgoth- or Sauron-affected darkness. Or perhaps it does not, and there is more to the wound. Aragorn frowns slightly to himself, and when he answers Thranduil, it's slightly distracted. ]

I am told that I am much akin to Elendil. As Isildur is his son, I daresay I resemble him as well.

[ He can't help it: his discomfort seeps into his voice. ]

Your temperament is more akin to Elendil, or Anarion. The blood of Númenor runs true in you. It is a thing to take pride in, that you resemble your fathers.

[He's getting the distinct feeling he's said something wrong, but even as a little clarity returns to him, he does not know what it was he said. Aragorn's ancestors were great men.]

'Tis an honour to be compared to Elendil and Anarion, my lord.

[ He really shouldn't continue from that. Should just take the compliment as it is meant. But Aragorn finds the words bursting out of him anyway- ]

It gladdens my heart indeed to be found dissimilar to Isildur.

[ Oh, goddamnit. ]

That should not be so. [Frowning, he wakes a little more. That's not acceptable. Not acceptable at all.] Isildur was a hero. He saved the White Tree twice, and ended the war with a broken sword. He lost much in order to do so.

[A deep, deep sigh. Arguing takes a lot of energy, and his thoughts are growing disconnected again.] Do not dishonor his memory. Had he been only a little closer, I might have saved him.

[ There's a long silence. Aragorn's fingers do not cease their movements - he continued to soak the rag in athelas-dipped water and dab it across every inch of the Elvenking's skin he could reach. Slowly he moves downwards, wetting the skin at the edge of the bandages, uncertain whether he should wet the linens. He knows he can rewrap them, but what the doctors have done is strange to him, and Aragorn does not wish to cause Thranduil more pain.

It's far easier to focus on the mechanics of healing than to address Thranduil's words. He hears the sincerity in the Elvenking's voice, and that shocks him to stillness far more than the words. ]

I have not heard many who have fought with Isildur to speak well of him. [ There has only been Elrond, and from him Aragorn has learned naught of Isildur than that the name is a byword for the weakness of Men. ]

I have long feared being akin to him.
elvenking: (Chillin'...not exactly like a villain.)

[A touch of a smile. A fond one, in memory.] Some found him hot-tempered. And some did not forgive him for taking the Ring. [The smile fades. His words become monotonous, like they flow without filter between his memory and the air.] He took it as weregild for his father and brother, and it is said it led to his death, is it not? That the servants of Sauron were drawn to it? He paid the price for it many times, with his life and the lives of his sons. No greater penance could have been made. Have you children, Aragorn?

[ Strange - Aragorn has heard the tale of Isildur's Bane aplenty, yet none has ever told him of Isildur with such fondness and regret. As if Isildur is truly a comrade who is missed, and whose loss is much grieved. Aragorn bites his lip for a mere moment, and lets out a breath. ]

No, I do not.

[ There are many times that he wished he did. When Denethor married Finduilas; when Boromir was born (though the Man the green-eyed sunchild had become had a very different relationship with Aragorn than he did with Thorongil); when he watched the Rangers around him married and had their children.

Really, what is it about Thranduil and personal questions? ]
elvenking: (Composure.)

When you do, you will understand.

[His eyes slide closed in blissful reverie under Aragorn's ministrations. He's not sure if it's the athelas or Aragorn's gentle manner, but it's the first time he's felt safe in...

...]

[ Aragorn blinks at the sudden end of the conversation, but he expected that, at least a little. He drops the rag into the water once more, wringing it and placing the hot cloth upon Thranduil's eyes. ]

Rest well, Elvenking, [ a soft murmur, almost a blessing. ] May your dreams be pleasant ones, and dark memories not intrude.
