That's nice of the ship.

( Until it wasn't, but she's not going there. There's enough sad things happening right now, and it was good having a friend. Better when it was someone that you knew well )

Admiral William Adama of the Battlestar Galactica. In charge of military operations of the Colonial Fleet. [And formerly her enemy turned surprising best friend. Or something like that. She and Bill were... There were no words to describe them.]

Then he'd likely be able to make sense of this.

( At least the ship, if things weren't so closed off to them. There were those that had been on the ship since the first jump but where was the ship going, and could anything be done about it? )

[And then, over the top of her glass as she took another sip:] He needs to make more friends.

( There was the smallest measure of a smile at that comment, and Maria gave a small nod before drinking a little more )

( They could talk. Whatever quite about, other than this ship and any experience would be a mystery )

He's a prickly man. [That was putting it lightly. Given he'd arrested her and thrown her in jail once. Now they were, well, best friends.]

Has he ever had a porcupine drawn on an assessment of him?

( Hilarious story that. Not really. That shouldn't have even been public knowledge goddamn you Coulson but. There was a point. If he hadn't he couldn't be that bad )

I assure you, if I had been able to have an assessment of him done at any point during my presidency, there would be a porcupine.

[Obviously? Laura raises an eyebrow. Is it... is it that obvious? Gods, she hopes not. Not when she can't really figure anything out herself.

We came to respect each other, after seeing what the other was capable of. I told you how I was 42nd in line for office. He didn't seem to think that a school teacher was capable of leading the fleet.

It's a big step up.

( Particularly being 42nd in line. No doubt the other 41 had fallen, leaving Laura in the small numbers that she'd mentioned. Obviously she was capable of doing the job, even if that wouldn't have been everyone's first opinion. A new job always came with difficulties until you settled, though. This was one of them )

How bad did the stand off get?

[She takes a drink, smirking over the mouth of her bottle.]

He had me removed from office and imprisoned, for doing what I believed would lead us all to Earth, even if it was against his orders.

Were you right about what you were doing?

( Would it have lead to Earth? That wasn't quite so much the important thing as to what happened after. Clearly he reinstated her )

Yes, yes I was.

[Oh, and she's proud of it.]

I sent Starbuck back to Caprica, to find the Arrow of Apollo. I sent her, as I knew she was the best viper pilot, and the most capable of doing such a thing. May she rest in peace, I was proven right.

( About 95% of that went over Maria's head, other than someone being lost in the cause. Why was someone always lost for a cause - a good, right cause? )

What did you prove?

That not only was Kara Thrace an incredibly competent pilot, and individual, but that the scrolls of Pythia were truly on to something, in regards to the location of Earth.

How close are you to finding Earth?

That's the problem. We have no way of knowing until we're there. We were stalled for near a year, when we found a planet that could sustain us.

That would be a problem. ( Particularly when you were stalled and lost time. Although if the planet had been able to sustain them, and it had been for a year, maybe it hadn't been that bad ) What was the planet?

We called it New Caprica. We remained there while Doctor Gaius Baltar [You can feel the disdain] was our president.

( There's a small frown, a flicker of confusion ) I thought that was you. ( Now is that disdain for the man or because he became president? )

I am president, yes.

I was made president only after all others before me were lost. Subsequently, I was only due to serve the rest of President Adar's term. Doctor Baltar was elected in a very close election. But not long after settling on New Caprica, we were found by the Cylons. Baltar immediately surrendered to them. After a year, there was an exodus, and Baltar was taken by the Cylons as a conspirator.

His vice president, and my former vice president, handed the role over to me, in a move that was considered the best for our remaining colonials.

I get the impression that you would have done things differently.

( Maria doesn't know too much about the Cylons other than what Laura had told her but Laura was a strong character. Resistance seemed more likely than surrender )

You left the planet?

I would never have surrendered.

[Or a million other things. God damn it, Baltar. You fucked everything up. And then you got to live AND a cult devoted to you and your Cylon god.

Point of interest: he also got a three-some with blonde!Xena and Caprica. Not fair.]

It was our only option. We agreed to push forward, to find Earth.
