[ katniss glances up at him: she's a little wary, not of edgeworth himself, but in this position, with her crouched and him above her, she's vulnerable, and that brings back unpleasant memories. she shifts her weight, but pess noses at her hand and she doesn't stand. ]

I've never seen a dog like this before.

[jurisimpudent]

Yes. She's quite special.

[ He says that with real fondness, real warmth, and crouches down over Pess as well. Pess, of course, is in raptures - attention from two sources! - and she flops over onto her side to demonstrate her happiness.

(Edgeworth, of course, ought to be good enough at reading people to know that Katniss was uncomfortable - but, honestly, he wasn't.) ]

Not in breed, I mean. She's a shiba inu, which is not an uncommon breed. But in terms of...personality.

[striking]

I've never seen a shiba inu before.

[ but then, where she comes from there are lots of things that are different. so this is probably just one more. katniss doesn't have much experience with any types of dogs, but those she has were either capitol handbag accessories or the rough mixed working breeds of twelve. ]

[jurisimpudent]

No?

[ Curious. But he supposes that her world is a different one. Panem is her place of origin; that's a nation that doesn't exist where he's from. No great surprise that it's not just national boundaries that are different. ]

What sorts of dogs do you know?

[striking]

They have poodles in the Capitol. And the little white ones, I don't know what those are called. Sometimes the Peacekeepers have hounds, or shepherds. Most of the dogs I knew growing up weren't anything. They were just dogs.

[ she doesn't look at him while she tells him, her hands sunk into pess' fur as he rubs at it. she seems overjoyed by everything, made happy so easily. ]

Must be nice to be a dog.

[jurisimpudent]

[ His response is shy, but honest. ]

I don't infrequently wish I were one.

[ And then he looks up, a little bashful and awkward, wondering if that sounded demented or stupid. He clears his throat. ]

But a dog lacks certain invaluable capacities, of course.

[striking]

[ he covers, blustering, but she can tell he meant the first thing more, so she just ignores it. losing all those invaluable capacities are part of why being a dog would be easier. ]

What sort of dog would you be?

[jurisimpudent]

[ He looks up self-consciously. Is she making fun of him? It's hard to tell with her; she's altogether restrained in her shows of emotion, very self-contained. But there doesn't seem to be any twist of irony in his voice. So, tentatively, he ventures: ]

I don't think I'd be any particular sort of dog. Dogs of particular breeds might cost more, but that doesn't mean they're actually more loved. The important thing would just be to be in a happy home, I think.

[striking]

I guess.

[ katniss sees his point, but: ]

I don't think I'd want to be a little yappy dog though. I'd want to be able to run a lot.

[ she definitely seems to be taking him seriously, since there's thoughtful consideration in her tone. it would probably be hard to tell if she was laughing at him, though. ]
