[ katniss does come, after a second, sitting in the seat next to him and peering closer at the cards. she glances at him, and then back to the cards again. after a moment, she makes a move, jack to queen. there isn't really any strategy in it, or not yet. ]

I'm Katniss.

[ she says, turning over a low number and then, after a moment's thinking, realizing she can send it up to the sky. ]

[ he answers. She's cautious, and he's patient, watching her place each card, not correcting or guiding, just leaning a metal elbow against the table with a heavy but cloth-muffled clunk and letting her play.

He wonders if he's done this part before, too. If he taught the girl with the green ribbons (Becca, if that's really her name, if she was ever real to begin with), or if it was only one of his twenty-eight ученики, learning how to become someone else. Either way, his posture softens, chin resting on gloved fist. ]
