It's been a rough few weeks before the jump. Not that they seemed to have another kind these days. And there are too damn many kids here stuck going through all of it. So Wash is doing what he can to make sure they have something fun and normal to distract them.

And besides, he'd promised Takeshi and Muscovy a pillow fort, and he wasn't inclined to break a promise. So he's gone up to the upper decks to retrieve pillows and blankets and is setting about building a fort out of them. In the end, he's a big kid at heart. So it's a fairly impressive fort.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your chief flight officer.

"Too messy?" Wash sounds more sad than anything. This is the sort of thing that every kid should get to do. But so many kids on Tranquility had never actually had the chance. "Or too much dangerous stuff going on?"

"I guess... Yeah...! Our aparpment was too messy. She woulda' got mad if I made it messier."

He nods, feeling very sure of himself.

"My old mom didn't like playing, anyways. But I got a new mom who does, so it's okay."

"Every kid should get to play. It's the best part of being a kid." Or an adult with certain childlike feelings.

"Your mom here's Heather, right?" Odd that he just says new mom. Like he doesn't really plan to go back to the old one.

[throwsdown]

He nods, and yeah, he seems extraordinarily chill about having a new mom.

"Yeah! She — she, um, is really sad 'cus dad's gone... but she's been good. She's been trying her best." And that is all Takeshi can hope for. And pray that it will end well. That he'll still have his mom and not an empty shell of what they used to have. These are things children his age don't worry about. But he's not a normal child. And he knows how horribly life can go for family.

"It's hard, when you lose someone you love. I was really sad when Zoe left." And it doesn't help that thanks to Simon he knows a bit about the future she's going back to. Namely the part where she'll be the one missing him. And unlike his situation, she'd never have the hope of seeing him again.

"But if we all look out for each other here, we can all do okay. She's still got you, and a lot of other people who care about her." Zoe would be okay. He had to believe that..

He nods.

"We'll be okay. Everything's gonna be okay."

He sounds so, so much like he wants to believe it. Like he has to.

"If you ever need someone to look out for you, I'll always help, too!"

"It is. We're gonna look out for each other and get through all this." None of them knew how or when people came and went here. But he was going to do everything he could for Takeshi and all the other kids here. Everyone here at all. Sure, he didn't know how, but was that really so different from life at home?
