It's been a rough few weeks before the jump. Not that they seemed to have another kind these days. And there are too damn many kids here stuck going through all of it. So Wash is doing what he can to make sure they have something fun and normal to distract them.

And besides, he'd promised Takeshi and Muscovy a pillow fort, and he wasn't inclined to break a promise. So he's gone up to the upper decks to retrieve pillows and blankets and is setting about building a fort out of them. In the end, he's a big kid at heart. So it's a fairly impressive fort.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your chief flight officer.

"I trained here for like, a year," Stiles says with a wry chuckle to his voice. "I can handle the shuttles okay. I'm better at fixing them than flying them — which sucks, because being a pilot is the coolest job in this place."

"Coolest job anywhere." Not that Wash is in any way biased. "Unless you're from a place that has something like dinosaur trainer." Which, you never know, he could be. People came from strange places here.

"We can work on getting your piloting skills up, if you want. Though if you're good with shuttle repair we could also use you on the project over in the secondary shuttle bay. Those are going to be right zippy when we get them working." And they're armed. Which isn't Wash's favourite thing in the world, but it might be a necessary one sooner than anyone wants.

"There's a secondary shuttle bay?" Stiles asks. "And here I thought stuff never changed around here." Still, he's torn: getting armed ships up and running sounds important, but getting more flying practice sounds like what he wants to do. A soft huuuuh as he considers, and: "Caaaan I do both?"

"Yeah, we found it after the DUPR people boarded. Things have gotten crazier in the past few months." And they had started off pretty crazy. What with starting with waking up in a tube of goo.

"Both's preferable. Once we have them working, we need people to fly them. Right now we have five trained pilots on the crew, plus a couple who can pitch in in emergencies. I'm almost ready to clear Gavvers to fly, but I'd rather not put him in anything with guns." Something about the fact that the person in question is one of the people the fort is for.

"Both?" Stiles asks, with a youthful pitchiness due to excitement, but he quickly clears his throat and tries to sound more casual. Not that he can stop beaming. "I mean, yeah, sure. I can do both, no problem."

As far as Wash is concerned, that degree of excitement is exactly what they need. And what the situation warrants. "Seriously, when these things are ready, they are going to be amazing to fly. You're going to want to do both so you get the chance."

"Yesss," Stiles fistpumps. He'd loved Caroline like a mother, but she'd promised his dad she'd take care of him, so she'd been kinda overprotective like a mother too, and even after a year he'd still felt like a trainee. This guy? This guy gets it.

"Is it cool if I pull for Medical, too? It's not my idea of a good time," he admits, "And I'm not gonna join the department, but sometimes they need a hand." Or so he's been told. It does seem like everything is understaffed these days.

"They always need help. My friend used to run that department, when I first came on board." Of course, that was the previous Simon, and even the one after was gone now. Everyone kept vanishing.

"I don't mind people doubling up. I used to help in Engineering when Caroline was still around." A lot of things were different when she was on board. Though Wash tried to keep some of her traditions going. Like the kids.
