The oxygen gardens take up a good portion of space on the Tranquility, as they help keep the ship's air and water supply pure, recycled, and filtered. The entire complex is bigger than four football stadiums stacked on top of one another, and the first level is actually much larger than the other three, extending for a good half mile in any direction. Each level is lit with fluorescent growlights, built into the ceiling high above floors themselves. Extending past these lights, on the ceilings (and in the walls) are extensive sprinkler systems. Floors two to four receive timed "rainfall" once a week, and are spritzed lightly otherwise. Level one is provided with a complicated mesh of sprinklers for seed plots, and the hydroponic systems provide the plants with irrigation.

[Sorry, Bardo, he's reached the tipping point; there are too many strange things happening in too short a period of time.]

Well, most people don't have tails. At least where I come from.

[So basically he's saying you're weird.]

Yeah, well most people do where I'm from.

[That little "other worlds" bit is something he keeps forgetting.

He has the feeling he's dug himself into a hole with his rudeness and the best thing to do would be apologize and back off, but that would leave him alone. Even if it's a complete stranger who's a bit of weirdo he'd prefer to have someone to talk to. ]

So, uh, where is that? Where you're from, I mean.

[Bardo's not about to be rude and leave the kid alone, plus it is nice to have someone to talk to even if they're just giving him grief about his limbs.]

My world's called Sisa, but I'm from a town called Setsura. [An ear flicks, follows the murmur of a passerby.] Where are you from?

I never heard a' anywhere like that. I'm from New York. On Earth. So I guess that explains why.

[He scratches his head.]

It's kinda hard to wrap your head around all that "other worlds" stuff, isn't it?

[Bardo's shoulders relax a fraction of an inch as he nods, teeth flashing ever so slight in a smile.]

Wasn't a thing I dealt with back home, but I guess y'spend enough time round it and it gets to be normal.

Me neither.

[That alchemy business is complicated enough, thank you very much.

He raises an eyebrow at Bardo and waves his hand around, gesturing to the whole of the ship and the other people packed into the gardens.]

You really think any a' this is somethin' somebody can get used to?

[Bardo shrugs and glances over the crowd of people.]

I'unno, probably not. [blink] Maybe if y'spend long enough here.

[Firo finds it absolutely mystifying that this guy can be so calm. Maybe this isn't too different from what happens where he lives; if people have tails like cats, what other weird stuff happens there?]

Do people have spaceships like this where you live?

[Bardo's just a calm guy, and even when he's not--he tends to act like he is. But this is certainly nothing like what he's used to at home and he shakes his head.]

No, cats stay on the ground where I'm from.

You mean you don't even have airplanes?

[Firo wonders if he should feel ashamed for getting so freaked out about this when it seems that this guy should be experiencing more of a culture shock.]

Airplanes?

[His ears twitch forward, enough of an answer really.]

...You've never heard of 'em? They're kinda like this thing, but a lot smaller and they stay a lot closer the Earth. They've been around for a while where I come from.

["A while" being relative. Firo's an immortal, but he's still young.]

Oh. [He rubs at his chin, contemplates that.] People live in them too?

Nah, not as far as I know. They just use 'em to travel if they gotta go a long way away. They're supposed to be faster than trains.

Do trains fly too? [Sorry Firo, he's from a time where everybody walks everywhere. Also, his world is small in comparison to 20th century Earth.]

Trains?

[He chuckles--come on, Firo, cut the guy some slack.]

No way. They gotta stay on the tracks to move.

[An ear flicks Firo's way at that chuckle, settles back in place with it's twin after a moment.]

Tracks? Like roads then?

Yeah, kinda! There's two rails and the train wheels fit right on 'em.

[He holds his hands parallel to try and show Bardo. It's not a very clear picture, but it's the best he can do.]

[It's enough of a picture, not for him to really know what a train looks like but for him to figure out a sketch of an idea.]

You've been on one before then? What're they like?

[Firo can't help but wince slightly as he recalls the train that took him from New York to San Francisco.]

Yeah, but it depends on what kinda train it is. The ones for travelers who can pay a lot are usually pretty comfortable--better than travelin' in a car--but others can be really rickety and cramped.

Ah, well isn't that the case with most things?

[He murmurs, more than a rhetorical question than anything else in the end.]

Well... I guess so. But it is a really big difference; ask a guy hoppin' on a freight train and somebody on a passenger train and they'll sound like completely different vehicles.
