forty-second jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: There's a strange sense of contentment that greets you as you wake from the jump. Deep and certain, it doesn't warm you or cloak the unpleasantness of the stasis fluid on your skin and the disorientation spinning in your head. It feels disconcertingly distant, instead, a sense as though an answer has been decided on - and that you won't much like to experience it coming to fruition...

New arrivals will find messages spraypainted across their lockers telling them not to follow their tattoo numbers, and instead to find a room on Floors 001-010.

----------------

YOU͘ ̨WAKE̢ ̧UP ́IN DA̛RKN̢E̕SS̶

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

YÓU̴ ̧ĄRE NOT҉ ̷ALǪNE҉

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

...That still kinda sounds like it all sucks. At least the dogs are just dogs back home.

[They're still not safe from memory stuff there, though, which is why he holds himself back from commenting on her remark with regards to that. He knows how unpleasant that all can be.]

[ Fortescue shrugs her shoulders lightly. ]

Our enemies tried a lot of things during the war, some of it grabbing creatures from other worlds to try and slow us down. And usually, it worked, to some regard. Now that the war's over, I'm sure there's a cleaning crew trying to make sense of all the nasty creatures who don't have a home anymore.

[He shakes his head.]

Seriously? How the hell did they expect that to turn out?

Rather like it did, I imagine. We always killed the creatures eventually, but most of them did a lot of damage before we were able.

[ Especially with the very large ones, like the worms that had tunneled through their lines and been big enough to try and eat airships out of the sky. ]

Of course, maybe they thought they could control them... But that was a rather misguided thought, to say the least.

[He nods. Even if he doesn't know what monsters she's talking about, he can imagine the damage that would occur if anything like the ones they've seen on the ship were released anywhere.]

You'd think people'd consider the future more when doin' somethin' that big... Just sounds like there's way too much room to screw up. Like usin' a bomb when you could use a knife.

Some people are just pyromaniacs. They'd rather take out an entire bunker than snipe a single soldier inside.

[ Which, hey, that line of thinking has its merits. But letting monsters rampage everywhere? No, thank you. ]

I know some pyromaniacs and even they're not that dumb.

[He probably shouldn't talk about his senior capos that way, but Randy and Pezzo wouldn't mind.]

But I guess some people are... They didn't think they'd hafta worry about the clean up, huh?

[ She nods, knocking back the last of her alcohol. ]

They imagined someone else would take care of it, I think, or we'd kill all of their unpleasant projects, or some ally of theirs would step up to the plate. Or perhaps they had a plan, and it went tits-up.

[ A corner of her mouth turns up slightly. ]

Thanks for keeping me company, by the way.

[ She imagines she looks pretty sad at the moment. ]

[What she describes is pretty typical of people, Firo supposes. He responds with a nod and a roll of his eyes.

At the next part, though, he smiles back.
]

Thanks for lettin' me bother you. It's nice to talk to somebody after all this crap.

[He figures it's probably not good to ask what's going on with her, but jumps are rough on everyone. There could be quite a few things to upset a person, all of them valid and awful.]
