forty-fourth jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: Awareness comes to you slowly in the smothering quiet of the blue fluid. In the light piercing through from the medical bay you realise there's a shadow, a figure stood at the glass of your gravcouch, a hand pressed to the surface just above your face. Fear spikes through your gut as waves of alien sensation crash into your mind, a rage that feels endless, all-consuming, furious, molten hatred that you know is for you.

When the fluid drains, door sliding open to deposit you on the medbay floor, you remember it. Remember it coming again and again, like a nightmare that plagued your sleep over and over, leaving you with no respite, no rest. Days. Perhaps even longer.

You remember that the light coming through from behind the shadow was red.

New arrivals will find messages spray-painted in red across their lockers telling them not to follow their tattoo numbers, and instead to find a room on Floors 001-010.

YOU͘ ̨WAKE̢ ̧UP ́IN DA̛RKN̢E̕SS̶

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

YÓU̴ ̧ĄRE NOT҉ ̷ALǪNE҉

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

"You and me both," Tadashi agrees, thinking back to all of the problems the recent events caused. Not even counting that... memory... he had seen, he'd gotten really worried for Takeshi and then for the others who were trapped away from the med bay. If things hadn't quieted down in time before the jump, well...

But they had. So Tadashi tries not to think along those lines again, even if he does keep coming back to the same "what if's" over and over.

"It got me thinking, actually..." He's not sure why he's telling Glacius this, but the alien struck up a conversation, so Tadashi is just going to roll with it for now. "I've been putting off joining a department, but I feel like I should ask about interning with the medical team. Just in case something else happens. I want to be able to help more people.."
glacius: (It's alright.)

Ah yes, the departments. Glacius was a familiar with a few of them by now; he'd even considered joining one called SEC, but he was still feeling very much an outsider amongst so many humans. Add that to the fact that he was accustomed to operating solo by this point in his life, and he wasn't sure if that was the wisest course for him right now...

... But Tadashi was a different story; a different sort of being under different circumstances. "I think that sounds very admirable," the alien responds gently, "If all the hardships that I have heard about on board this ship pan out to be true, then being willing to provide aid to those in need would be very helpful indeed. I am sure many would appreciate your assistance."

Tadashi nods, smiling slightly as the thought of being able to make an impact. There's a lot going on in his life, but he feels like as long as he can seize onto a single thread of purpose and press forward, things might just be... not okay, but survivable? It's a weird feeling that he isn't quite sure how to put into words yet.

More than anything, he just needs to find things to keep his mind occupied. It's always helped before with lesser problems, so if it helped then...

"Do you mind if I ask what you spend your time on here?" Tadashi gestures vaguely toward the ship at large rather than just this area. "I've been keeping track of my brother and working on projects with him, but I'm going to try to break out of my comfort zone. It looks like I might be here a while."
glacius: (Let me ponder that one.)

Glacius considers this; he's not big on spilling his affairs to random strangers, but as long as Tadashi isn't asking about anything too personal he is willing to continue this conversation. "When I first arrived I was quite busy trying to create a suitable environment in which I could live comfortably. I ended up modify one of the rooms with compartments from the freezer on an upper floor; it took the assistance of a number of other engineers on board to see that project finished." It was definitely worth it in the end, though; even if it'll never be the same as his homeworld, he at least has some place to retreat where he can get peace and quiet... and freezing cold.
tadashiwashere: (impressed: look what i did)

Tadashi nods with an appreciative frown in reply to that, shoving his hands into his pockets and rocking back slightly on his heels, impressed with what the people here have done to make sure everyone is as comfortable as possible. He's not sure how well everyone gets along on a deeper level, but from an outside perspective with only being here a month... it's an impressively thoughtful community given their extremely varied circumstances.

Nothing like a killer spaceship to bring everyone together.

That asked now, Tadashi veers away from further prying. He isn't the type to blatantly disrespect someone else's privacy. No matter how curious he is.

"The engineers I've met so far seem to be really dedicated. They must do a lot more than I thought." Which was saying something. He was sure they were stretched thin just taking care of the ship's vital workings.
