twenty-sixth jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: Your average, run-of-the-mill jump—except some characters don't seem to be waking up from stasis like they should.

Don't worry.

THEY NEEDED THE REST.

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

I am with the police. And normally, I never had to deal with that stuff.

Currently? I haven't known normal for a long while now.

Did you come across a case that changed how you view things or somethin'?

[Which, oddly enough, sounds a bit like him as well.]

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest? It's more like an ongoing case. And it's going to take a long time for me to solve.

But my views did change for better or for worse.

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-12 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Things like that happen, and it may seem like it's worse, but I've learned that the change is usually for the better. Ain't nothing good to be accomplished if you've always got your blinders on.

That case might take you a little longer to solve now that you're here, though.

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-12 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and that's what I'm worried about the most. I have sister back home too. She can take care of herself, but I'd rather not keep her or my other friend waiting.
invigor: (➤there's no turning back)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-14 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Guess we all got people back home we're worryin' about. But as long as they're not here, they probably have it better than we do regardless.

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-14 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Abbie glances around at the surrounding lockers and then the ceilings.]

For now, I'll probably be spending the next hour or two seeing how much of this place I can explore.

[And then she looks at her communication device.]

Lucky me. This is basically like a smartphone.
invigor: (➤run away i've got to)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-14 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be careful if I were you. Apparently it's easy to get lost in the halls, and that's when you might run into something you didn't account for. [He pauses.] If you need some company, might be safer.

Smartphone? [are you complimenting your not!phone]

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-14 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Someone drew me a rough map of this place, but it doesn't seem like she's covered much ground.

[She blinks at his offer, but then nods.] Good idea. Getting lost is not something I'd like to do on my first day in space.

[Heh. Abbie smiles at Booker's questioning remark (like it's some private joke) as she pockets the device.]
invigor: (➤this tainted love you've given)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-14 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
[To be honest, Booker's offer to tag along isn't just one of pure generosity -- he has his own reasons for doing so, his own motives for wishing to explore the ship. Taking advantage of this opportunity isn't something he'd want to miss right now, and he's going to give her the benefit of the doubt that she knows what she's doing.]

Especially since getting lost means you might be lost for days or longer. Don't know about you, but I'd want to avoid that happening.

[He raises a brow at the smile. You neglected his implied question. 8| ] ...What?

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-14 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you were here before me right? Let's start with the places that you know first so we can get those outta the way quickly.

[If there's one thing she learned from being around a man out of his own time, it's that she doesn't waste time standing around to give lengthy explanations. Much more fun that way.]

And don't worry about it. Lead the way.
invigor: (➤help me to decide)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-14 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[all right fine, he'll let it go for now]

Right then. Firstly, do you have some kind of weapon on you?

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-14 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[She turns to show the handgun she has attached to her side.]

Just a regular handgun with 24 rounds. It's not gonna last me so let's hope we don't run into anything serious.

invigor: (➤say that you'll never never)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-14 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[He eyes that handgun -- a "regular" one, she says. Sure is a lot fancier than his, at least.

He pats his own weapon he currently carries, which is kept conveniently holstered at his side as well.]

Got limited rounds for mine, too. Thankfully I got a few other tricks up my sleeve if it comes down to it. But let's hope it don't come down to it.

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-14 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[That is one old-fashioned Mauser.]

We're going for a nice walk. Can't imagine it can go wrong that quickly.

[Okay, so she's tempting fate here, but goddammit she needs some lightheartedness.]
invigor: (➤lord i hate to see her go)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-15 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
A nice walk. Sure, we'll call it that.

[Ever the cynic, he is. Still, he motions for her to follow him -- out of the medbay and towards the elevators. They shall have a wandering adventure! Baby steps first though.]

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
[She follows along and she ends up walking next to him. Without her usual heeled boots... Yeah, she's short. But all things considered, Abbie's holding herself together well.

And her eyes do quickly give him a glance over, observing this person who she's temporarily teamed up with.
]

So, the year 1912... I doubt being in space in the middle of god knows what galaxy was something you ever expected to happen?
invigor: (➤oh i followed close behind her)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-15 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, to be fair, standing at 6'1", Booker isn't exactly a small man. He walks by her side easily enough, making an effort to not make his strides too long or too fast.

He scoffs at the question. An amused, deprecating sort of scoff.]
Both yes and no. Being in space is farfetched, sure, but... being in unusual situations was turning into a habit of mine before I was brought here. Been in a city in the clouds and a city underwater -- so yeah, why not space?

Edited 2013-12-15 08:46 (UTC)

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-15 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Abbie's eyebrows raise, but she nods in understanding.]

Yeah. Why not?

[The very mention of those last two preposterous concepts and being in unusual situations in general is making Abbie feel way better about things, more than he'll ever realize. At least it confirms for her that he isn't from her reality, or whatever. She's still gotta wrap her mind around this multiple universes thing.]

The person I mentioned being older than you? 1781.
Edited 2013-12-15 08:51 (UTC)
invigor: (➤undertaker please drive slow)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-15 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Thankfully he doesn't have to think too hard on the multiple realities front. However, she has got him thinking about what kind of people the ship chooses to be here. As she said, maybe they're all the sort that have interesting or unusual stories to tell -- in that case, the question of why someone or something would hope to collect these people still remains unanswered.

He'll have to add it to his notes when he gets back to his room.]

1781... [That's a big difference between 1912.] This person travelled through time or somethin'?

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-15 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
In a manner of speaking, yes.

[It's complicated.]

It took me a while to really buy his side of the story, but I guess the fact that a woman wearing pants made his brows raise should have convinced me enough.
invigor: (➤once i ran to you)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-15 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
...Well, I wasn't gonna say nothing about it.

[He's only halfway serious about that, indicated by the sliiiightest upturn of his lips. Women wearing pants is kinda strange for him to see (though in the coming years it'll become more prominent in his time), but even if he's been here only a month, he's used to it by now. And really, something like that is pretty tame in the realm of "weird".]

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-15 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
[The slightest roll in her eyes are made.]

I can't exactly do my job in skirts and dresses. Nice and breezy, easier to fall on your face when you're pursuing a criminal.
invigor: (➤turn your back on Mother Nature)

[personal profile] invigor 2013-12-15 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
[He holds up his hands.] I know better than to argue the point with a woman. [Besides, it makes sense. If women were to be police officers, as well, he wouldn't expect them to run around in a skirt in heels.]

[personal profile] bearwitness 2013-12-15 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Damn straight.

[Back to business, small talk can come back in a bit.]

Say, do you know how we're able to breathe up here? There has to be a source of oxygen that circulates through the ship right?
