SUMMARY: Lilith got a sad photo in her locker, so she and Mordecai meet up to talk about the good old times, the bad old times, and everything else.


It took Mordecai a while to get himself and all his animals cleaned and sorted after the jump, but finally the chickens were in the oxygen gardens, and he was dressed and armed to the teeth just in case he spotted Jack. Mijo was following, this time - every time he landed on Mordecai's shoulder, a hand would come up to sweep him off and force him to perch elsewhere, in an attempt to get the little bird to exercise his flight muscles. Not that it would do much good here, but Mordecai had to do something so the little guy didn't turn into the bloodwing version of a couch potato.

He took a longer walk than needed to get to Lilith's place from the lockers, giving him time to clear his mind from the effects of the jump, but eventually he arrived and knocked at her door.

"Now that, I definitely understand. Drives me crazy, hearin' about some a' the people here, who've never seen anything but one planet and are happy with that. They dunno what they're missing." Edgeworth was a prime example, but definitely not the only one. And yeah, most of them didn't have a choice, without technology being in their favor. But it was kind of sad to see how happy people were to have seen so little.

She rested an elbow on the table and nodded. "That was one thing my father told me to do when I was young. He told me to go see the stars and don't look back."

"Sounds like a good man. Long as he doesn't mind not seein' you, I guess."

That caused a small frown to form on her face. "He wouldn't be able to do any of that even if I had stuck around."

He frowned as well and had a drink. There wasn't really much question about what that meant. "What happened?" he asked.

She shrugged and stared down at her beer. "Not really sure what happened, but it's long over now."

He wasn't exactly sure what to say to that. Death wasn't normally something he had a lot of sympathy for, but there'd been a lot of it that actually meant something to him lately, and he could tell this was one of those things for her. "Well, he gave you some good advice, an' you've been usin' it to its fullest. Guess that's a better legacy than a lotta people get to leave."

His death had been one of those defining moments in her life and she hadn't regretted what she'd done with her freedom after the fact. She was eager to change the topic, though. "What about you? You haven't told me anything about before you got to Pandora."

"Well, I dunno what there is to say or where to start. You don't want a complete history of my life, anyway. Just a kid an' a bird killin' things for most of it." Sure, he had his stories. There was plenty to tell. But it wasn't like he'd ever had anyone interested enough to listen, before, or any real desire to tell it.

"Yeah? What about right before you got there?" She wasn't looking for a complete history of his life, since she hadn't been willing to give him one either, but it'd be good to know more about someone she'd spent the last several years working with.

"Right before Pandora? I was out on Promethea, actually. Talk about a shithole, that place. Lotsa bounties to be had, but they didn't pay enough to keep me interested in stickin' around long. Then I killed the wrong guy 'cause he pissed me off, so the locals ran me out. Guess the only reason they didn't just kill me is 'cause they were too afraid of what Bloodwing'd do if they tried."

She laughed and drank down the rest of her beer. "You're kidding me. What was the guy, the local legend or something?"

"Somethin' like that. Big asshole, if you ask me. Turns out he wasn't as good at quick draw as he claimed."

"Did he challenge you to a duel at high noon?"

"Heh, no, nothin' that cliche. I guess it wasn't the most fair contest. I don't think he actually knew he'd entered one. But when you're all talk about how you're so damn good with a revolver an' who needs that merc who claims he's better, well, you know. There's only so much of that I can tolerate before he's gotta prove it."

"I'm not surprised you beat him. I bet they were more upset at how crappy their best shot was than you killing the guy."

"Yeah, prob'ly. Especially 'cause it meant when I left, they didn't have anyone to look out for them anymore. But I sure as hell wasn't gonna stick around if they couldn't pay me. You ever been to Promethea?"

"No, but I'm guessing it looks like the rest of the backwater, border planets."

"Yeah, but worse off when it comes to their economy. I thought I'd try it, you know. Somethin' different. Definitely don't have to worry about a government or police force gettin' in the way of work. But the return is a bunch of crap, so I moved on."

"Pandora has been the best one I've found for that." She pushed her empty bottle towards him. "Mind grabbing us another round?"

"Yeah, sure. You want the same?" He gulped down the last of his - chinga, he really had been slower today than usual thanks to that jump - and then got up, ready to dispose of their bottles and get more.

"Yeah, more of the same." She was drinking faster than usual and she knew it, but that wasn't going to deter her.

He returned shortly with another for her, and something a little different for him, some kind of mysterious mixed drink with cola and who knew what, since he felt like he could use the caffeine. He had a sip, and raised his eyebrows a moment because wow, whatever he'd dumped in there had a hell of a kick. "Anyway. Yeah, Pandora's been good to us, hasn't it." In terms of the loot, anyway. What they'd both lost hadn't been the planet's fault.

"Yeah, it has." Though now her interest wasn't in their conversation but was in whatever had got that kind of reaction out of him. She leaned a little closer to peer into his glass. "What's in there?"

"Your guess is as good as mine," he said, sliding the glass toward her. "Have a taste. I think it's kinda like vodka?" By which he meant straight up distilled alcohol with nothing else to get in the way, and he hadn't exactly gone light on the mix.
