thirty-first jump;

CHARACTERS: Any and all.
LOCATION: Gravity Couches and beyond.
WARNINGS: Maybe some swearing, or even some violence, and more than likely some implied (and possibly explicit) nakedness.
SUMMARY: Another month, another jump, another round of new faces.
NOTES: There is something very easy about waking from the gravcouches this month. The sensation of being watched is absent, and so is much of the sickness - even for those characters who entered Engineering in February. Instead the jump feels comfortable, the stasis fluid warm on your skin, the medbay lights not too harsh as you emerge amongst your fellow passengers. The sensation may be unnerving in its strangeness, but there will be a deep feeling of being well-rested, calm and content, that will not be completely lost no matter how much you question it.

You wake up in darkness.

There's a breathing tube jammed down your trachea, and you're suspended in a tube of clear blue fluid. Upon registering your level of consciousness, the gravity couch drains the fluid surrounding you and retracts the breathing apparatus; the doors in front of you open, and you're deposited on the floor of a stark, sterile medical bay.

You are not alone.

There are others who have come before you, others who are awakening beside you. Some may be familiar to you, perhaps even friends. Others have much less amiable plans. Some are merely alien and inexplicable, but there are always those who might mean you harm.

After you catch your breath and your vision returns, you notice a number on the inside of your forearm. Maybe it's a familiar number. Maybe it means something. Maybe it's just a number. But the number—completely unique to you—is a tattoo, and it does not come off.

If you enter the room adjacent to the medbay, you will find a small locker with your number on it, surrounded by rows upon rows of identical lockers. Inside, you will find a few of your personal items, a communications device, and a ship's uniform in your exact size. The comms device is fully powered and connects directly to the ship's network; it's your only means of communication beyond physical conversation. Upon turning the device on, a neutral, automated voice will say, "Please take the blue lift to the passenger quarters." Any other attempts at communicating with the rest of the network are met only with static.

This is your welcome party.

[Have another girl of sixteen. This one in a plain dress and a pointed black hat, that she fixes on her head after being walked into.]

I'm sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention.

It is I who lacked attention, Lady.

[ she doesn't truly seem a lady but lucrezia has been on the tranquility long enough to know some ladies wear simple clothes but are ladies nonetheless. she dares not assume otherwise. ]

Are you alright?

I'm fine, thank you.

[A polite reassuring smile back. Witches are used to getting respect and Tiffany always tries to avoid people being too uncomfortable around her if she can help it.]

I'm still getting used to the idea of such closed of spaces I'm afraid.

I have been here for many months and I still find that somewhat difficult. even many months later, I miss the sun and the open fields of flowers.

[ she smiles a bit; it's been well over a year and she is still learning. ]

the gardens are the closest we may get to that.

I wonder if anyone is really used to this place.

[The lack of connection to her land is still troubling her a month later.]

Did they have any of this "technology" where you are from?
mansuetus: (☩ 83.)

[personal profile] mansuetus 2014-05-13 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not one. There are those who are better adjusted, who would think of this realm as their own but they are not truly used to it. one can not be used to a ship which is ever changing.

[ lucrezia had tried, she married here and yet this is not rome. ]

Not at all. It has taken me quite some time to learn it all, it seemed like magic to me when I first came upon this ship.

Wizard magic maybe. Though apparently this world has a significant lack of it.

They call it science here. I was told science is oft mistaken for magic by those who do not understand it or its roots.

[ curiously; ]

but you know true magic?

I know witchcraft. It's not the same as wizard magic.

At least where I'm from it's not.

[That reminds her. Have a nod.]

I'm Tiffany Aching, witch of the Chalk lands.

There are differences? tell.

[ because to her, magic is magic, extraordinary as it is. the little details are beyond her but they do interest her as a whole. many would think magic a terrible blasphemy in her own realm but lucrezia remains curious. she knows many who are capable of magic here and while she mistrusts some, she loves others. ]
